What is a transport pod? Troop transport bays do not make a ship military, but I never said they did. Drop pods DO make it a military ship IIRC, which is what the message I quoted was talking about. He mentioned having drop pods on a ship and that you could make said ship civilian, which I do not believe is correct.

Sorry, I accidentally made a misleading sentence. What I meant was that you can transport your troops in civilian transports and later use them in combat as boarding troops by transferring them to actual boarding ships. Both transporting troops long distances in combat-ready state and transporting them inside military ships are suboptimal.

While true, you have to get the ship with drop pods to the same location either way. I guess you could do it your way though. I just make a dedicated combat drop ship with both pods and bays and transport the troops in them, transferring the troops to the pods at the last second.

Yeah, putting transport bays on your boarding shuttle won't do, as they'll slow them down too much. And since having troops in drop pod for a long time cause moral losses, you need them.

The best way is to have a mothership with both hangar and troop transport bays (or a separate, civilian troop transport for less maintenance) as well as good armor. PD escort would be a good idea too.

Inside the bay are shuttles with nothing but a drop pod, a Gunboat/Fighter Engine (whichever is faster.), and a very little fuel. It needs to be as fast as possible.

It may be a good idea to have some missile capacity, to take off engines and slow down your prey as well.

I should point out that I never do ship-to-ship boarding, my drop pod ships are for landing entire divisions on the ground at once. In my most recent campaign I annihilated all enemy orbital traffic from 360 million kilometers with extreme range MIRV drones and then simultaneously landed 8 divisions of combined arms troops to almost instantly annihilate all enemy resistance. Took over an alien population and scored some tech.

You know troop transport bays and cargo handling multipliers ar more than enough?

Its far less epic sounding though. Also, even with a few cargo handlers it takes like a day or two to unload a full division. I had 2 100,000+ ton dropships which each carried 4 full divisions.

Well, you either need a few more cargo handling (you can have lots of them in a 100,000 ton ships) or to split up into more ships. My current troopship has enough space for one division and can lower it in 4 hours. And it's civilian (read: no maintenance). And I don't need separate troop transport.

Where is the research item for boat bays/hangers? I've checked everywhere and done full reinstalls of the game but it seems to be completely impossible to research those in my games (if I open a game done by someone else I can find those in ship design but still can't find what was researched to unlock them). From what I've found it should be in Logistics/Ground Support as Boat Bays, iirc, but that doesn't show up, even checking all possible research items.

Maybe you've got them already?

My game gives me around 100 errors when I try to go X days ahead in time.
8 hours sometimes give me those errors and shorter time jumps don't give me errors at all

Anyone encountered this before? I run vista, have followed the instructions, decimal crap is alright and game is not installed in my program files (can't update that way).

Definitely don't have them already. Only found out there was a problem when I went to design a mothership for some fighters to find I didn't have anything in the design screen to load them into.

how do I change the position of star systems on the galactic map?

Edit:Also, what are the point of colonies on bodies that can be terraformed but don't have many minerals?

Shift-left mouse button drag.  And then don't forget to use the save button (cunningly located under the "Sys Pos" button) or it will undo it all.

1) Each colony gives more potential civillian trade once it hits a certain minimum size (3 mil?)
2) Smaller colony gives higher pop growth than huge one like earth.  (on its tiny pop, but have enough colonies and then it does add up)
3) If it's on the frontier, can be a handy maintenance base
4) Not THAT hard to ship minerals in.  Heck any colony will run out of minerals eventually (unless you get a REALLY lucky roll with millions), so be ready for it.
