woo woo aurora 2.

The site has always been hosted on the Aurora 2 domain, I don't think there is such a thing.

No, it has been hosted on the plain Aurora domain before in the past. The Aurora 2 was only added when they switched forum types due to the earlier type not being able to take the strain.

I don't think there is such a thing.

Oh, that's not necessary, just some advice is fine, I mainly would like to see examples of existing designs and how they were used, as well as advice on how to use cloak ships.

EDIT: Or I could give the save game if you'd like to critique what I've done so far.

Well, if you want a stealthy scout you'll want it to have excellent passive sensing abilities, a small hull size, and very low emissions. So it'll likely be small, slow, and lack active sensors.

And it takes a fairly long time before cloaks are really compact enough to be worth it, IMHO. If you want an all-purpose exploration ship, you need jump drives, geo- and grav-sensors, high fuel efficiency (if it's expanding your outer borders, by necessity it's going to be a long way from refueling sites), and a long endurance time. I also prefer to have hyperdrives on mine, because it really speeds up surveying the outer portions of most systems.

I played around with stealth surveryors, but found that it was generally just more cost-effective to build several survey ships for cheap. I lose some decent survey officers that way, but hey...that's why you have military academies.  :P

I actually fast-track space exploration by making two classes of surveyors:

1. A fast, jump-capable grav-surveyor with moderate armor and light weapons. Since grav-sensors make it a military ship anyways, I might as well take advantage of that. I stick one geosurvey sensor on it so that I can scan nitrogen-oxygen and nitrogen-methane worlds for possible NPRs and colonization purposes.

2. A slower, but long-endurance geosurveyor with commerical drives for followup prospecting. Once I've grav-surveyed the system and determined it to be safe, I'll drop one or two of these into the system (they're not jump-capable so I either build a network of jump gates, or use a civilian jump tender) and set them on automated survey. Since they're so small, I can crank them out by the score, and work on training up fresh new survey officers while I'm at it.

So, has anyone who is/was playing this had any experience with successfully using High Power Microwaves?  My fleets typically use reduced-size missile launchers for most of their offensive power and a combination of AMMs and gauss turrets for defence.  I'm looking to add a longer-ranged beam weapon that can do some offensive heavy lifting when I need it to.  I was thinking that since I already have quite a bit of turret firepower from the gauss cannons HPMs might work really well - blind things with the microwaves and then close to gauss range once they aren't firing back.

Given that I'll be sticking with missile strikes for most of my offensive work I suppose it isn't a big deal, but for jump point defence, cleaning up damaged ships without wasting ordnance and other such situations HPMs might be pretty useful.  Anyone else had any experience with them?

If this guy could get someone who knew how to do UI, this game would be great. Because sweet Jesus does this guy suck at UI.

I dunno, I tend not to like HPMs, because it doesn't slow them down, which mean they can get out of beam range if they're faster than you.

I personnally like mesons. Sure, they are weak and not that long-ranged, but bypassing the armor completely ensure you can destroy the thing, or at least wrech it very quickly.

Anyone know if the dev plans on adding some graphics to this game, it is begging for it.  I love the imagination part of it, especially some of the details plans done by players on the Aurora forums.  So the best bet would be to include some option for graphics to be modded in the community, because maybe the dev's strong suit isn't art.

I will say /definitely never/ for the current Aurora. Who knows what Aurora 2 will bring, if it ever gets done :P

Hrmm, so I'm still in the early first few years of my game. Followed the tutorial exactly to get started. I'm surveying the beginning system and have come across Venus. It has 3 mineral deposits, all in extremely large numbers.

Duranium 17,000,000
Tritanium 10,000,000
Sorium 13,000,000

The two I'm most interested in, obviously, are the Duranium and Sorium. Problem is, that while the Tritanium has an Acc of 1, Duranium and Sorium have the low rating of Acc .1.
Are they still worth trying to mine out early on, or should I just try and focus on smaller but easier to get deposits elsewhere?

Search for better deposits. And put a highly trained geology team (train them in some worthless asteroid, so if they screw up the minerals, it's no big deal), which might even raise considerably the accessibility. But you should be able to find very big deposits with nicer accessibility somewhere else.  And specially Duranium, you'll be using a LOT, so it's worth finding easier access.

I'm pretty sure that's not a good idea, as all the times I've put a team on a asteroid/comet they took ages and ages to search them even once.

The only thing I don't like about Mesons is that since they only do 1 point of damage they're quite poor against larger components. An engine, for example, has 2 HTK (hits to kill) so if it's hit with 2+ points of damage it's destroyed, but if it's hit with 1 there's only a 50% chance it'll destroy the engine and a 50% chance it'll do nothing at all.  A jump drive, huge sensor or main magazine might have 10 HTK, leaving the mesons pretty wimpy-seeming.  Tons of 1-damage meson hits will still do loads of damage just via probability, but each individual hit against something larger than 1-2HS will have a chance to do nothing. The armour and shields bypass is crazygood, though.  Mesons also have no falloff over range, so they're just as good as particle beams for long range hurt, which is cool.

You're better off putting them on planets that are otherwise worthless, IMO - like you say, it can take teams months or years to survey an asteroid, but only weeks on a planet.

I usually train the teams on moons and after I finish with 10-20 moderate-sized moons in 5-20 years my by then highly trained survey teams may take 10-20 years to finish survey on 1 comet or asteroid. If I recall correctly a team with high enough rating maxes out at 70% chance to continue survey after each discovery. (It was even more ridiculous 90% in old versions.)

Last 3 reports from my veteran team with 250+ rating were about finding yet another 10k ton Boronide on a comet. Chances are (~ 8%+8%*0.7+8%*0.7*0.7+... = 10/36 ~ 28%) they'll find a fourth useless Boronide deposit there.
