They do seem a bit cheaty. Can you put a commander in one of those?

Yes. They might seem a bit gamey due to the usage of the orbital habitat mechanic, but they're quite balanced in the end. They're hella expensive and you need very powerful tugs to move them (at barely around 500 km/s), meaning journeys take months, and there's no chance of escape if you're jumped by hostile warships. Plus they can only be moved through jumpgates, thanks to their massive size. The presence of the sole orbital habitat module can be roleplayed as the main living quarters for the thousands of workers required to keep the 50 terraforming modules working correctly (not that the official crew figure is modest at all).

I actually include more Habitat Modules on my terraforming stations just to give a boost to the population of the planet I'm terraforming. Habitat Modules will provide the workforce for a planet THEN after all it's available population is used the planet will start using the populace supported by infrastructure. I've got a few large freighters that cart mines around with the station to so it pretty much goes as follows. Terraforming station arrives at a planet, freighters drop down mines, station populace starts their day shifts at the mines and return to the station at the end while the station itself goes about terraforming the planet.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

Are the portal aliens precursors or galactic invaders?

The wormhole aliens are the Invaders that destroyed the Precursors' empire ages ago.

Which is odd to me because you can take the Wormhole aliens and your much MUCH less advanced then the precursors.

Then again, that kind of plothole is common in sci-fi

Uhhh, what? The Invaders are much harder then the Precursors, but you can more easily surpass the latter's tech. Or at least their robot ships' tech.

Yeah but in terms of the Precursors that is like attacking a countries mall cops and saying you defeated their military.

Unless the Precursors seriously injured the invadors before dying off.

Well, you don't know what was the Precursors' tech level. And anyway, maybe the Invaders used some sort of informatic malware or some other utlimate weapon.

I think being able to spread malware would be pretty awesome. Hacking enemy firewalls, inserting viruses and pretty much disabling all connected electronics aboard their ship.

They probably didn't need anything more than the tools they already had. That is, wormholes. The ability to instantly strike at your enemy's weak points is invaluable.

And in the hands of a skilled commander, empire-crippling.

The ability to destroy the wormhole aliens is easy to explain: You're not fighting their main army, just a bunch of scouts.  They realize your tech is nowhere near the Precursors, so they don't bother sending in their regular force.

Well, that or they're busy somewhere else, and just send a few scouts here and there to make sure everything is fine, and who'll need to be nuked once they're finished...

Either that or the wormholes are actually quite resource expencive so much so that not defeating the precursors actually crippled their economy.

Afterall they may have went all out on the precursors and even wiped them out before the remaining drone army defeated them.

Actually that is another thing I'd love them to add
