Restart humanity with the refuelling colony. Win the game. Be awesome.
Now I want to do this. Agh!

Any good designs for a starting player?

You don’t mention what you’re looking for, but here’s some basic designs that I use in my games, which use tech that you more or less start off with:

Missile Cruiser
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Scout / Geo Survey Ship
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Missile PDC
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

GeoSurvey Ship
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Freighter
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Most of my other commercial ships (colony ships, terraformers, jump gate constructors) are just built off the freighter hull. If you design them correctly (I'm not certain what exactly the conditions are,) you can use one commercial shipyard to build all of them without refitting.

Thanks. I'll keep these in mind while I'm designing ships.

Also, fun ahoy. I've built my first jump gate to Alpha Centari. A couple minutes after I arrive, some unknown alien ships get blown up by nuclear blasts.

And of course, I accidentally retooled my military spaceport to my geological ship. So while I'm waiting for the retooling to finish, I'm left with three crappy defence ships and no way to built more.

Lovely.

Hmmm, I suggest you just stay back in Sol... wait a few tens of years until your fleet is ready. Don't let them know that you're there.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

That's what I'm going to do.

EDIT: Jesus Christ. Whoever is on Alpha Centurai A-II has a megaton of nukes. Over 1000 explosions and counting.

I wonder now how many missiles that would be.

Spoiler: Fun waste of time... (click to show/hide)

If it helps, the AI seems to be mostly using 1, 6, 7, 8 size missiles.

As I posted on the Aurora forums (I'm Shadow there), my current game can't seem to get past a specific construction cycle.

I had a good thing going on. Steve's personal assistance is my last hope...

You scan a jump point and then put a warp gate there?

Open the Create Research Project window (Ctrl+F6), design a engine, then research it the same way you would other things. Tadah, you can now put engines on your ship designs, or build them from planetary factories.

...Huh?

Uhhh... Travel to them and jump. Any ship should be able to do it with a Jump Gate on a Jump Point, even if they don't have jump engines. Just remember that Jump gates are only built on one side of the Jump Point at a time.

And now I'm stuck in some barren system with no way to get my view back to Sol.

That's why you put jump engines on ships you expect to jump into systems without Jump Gates.
