So, we are reduced to nit-picking about recycling and the real life brand of realism?

So, I got a bit bored and went into SM mode. And ended up creating a new ship design afterwards!

You just gave me an amazing idea. Use SM to make a mothership for my race to live on and abandon all planets. Like in Homeworld.

Congratulations!  You've built an expensive PDC.

The there are two problems with that ship. One is that there isn't enough maintenance for repairs if the ship is damaged severely and is alone. Another is that it doesn't have any missile weapons at all, meaning it always has to advance before engaging, which is really bad since any enemy missile ship faster than your mother ship can outrun it indefinitely and continue bombarding it from a distance.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.
Quote from: Ze Spy
Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

As I said, it's a glorified PDC.  It's too slow to catch enemy ships.  It's easily detected, which combined with its speed gives enemy civs plenty of time to gather/build forces to fight it.  Missile boats can attack it with impunity.  It's also quite possibly too slow to catch a planet once it leaves orbit.

Just thought I add my two pence in the discussion.
I personally like the fact that you have to explore to find new minerals. I always play space empires 5 with limited resources. I like to generate aurora few times to get as little as possible of starting resources on earth, so I have to explore the system and set up new mining colonies and freight lines. I can certainly see uses of TN materials in the factories and buildings. When you start the game you presumably have the earth at its pinnacle of engineering, yet you can easily double the production speeds after just a couple of years using new TN factories. I can even see uses of TN in infrastructure. Imagine TN style railroads, super-strong city sized pressurized bubbles for colonization, extremely efficient sorium energy generators, elevators/cars/lorries using antigravity. Sure the civilian infrastructure can/will be build from ordinary resources but the neat, state sponsored stuff will be much more useful. As for recycling exploded missiles, that is just daft. The fact that the dust like particles will be in motion forever, being in space and all, the capturing and reusing them would be an impossible task. Most of the dust would after couple of years fall into the sun and burn. even after centuries of warfare there would not be enough dust around to even register on sensors. There is no need anyway, there is literary tons of minerals all around, why would you chase around for few microns all around the solar system. As for soruim the recycling is quite simply impossible, it being burned and turned into different chemical compounds. With any luck you may discover 1 - 2 gas giants with atmosphere loaded with sorium, all you need to do is tow a couple of refineries and place them in orbit around the gas giant. they usually have millions of tons of sorium in them, more than you need for centuries of expansion.

It would be absolutely massive for an orbital population center to take all of your 500 million starting population, and remember it cannot MOVE with a population unless it has an equal number of cryo berths.

That said, you would orbit a colony and population would simply EXPLODE out of the ship, generated from their breeding, then you could move on leaving the extras behind to continue on.

In homeworld "The Mothership" was used by a load of people to escape their planet. It took so many people in cryo-bays and had little defensive features and was fairly slow on normal engines but it had a powerful jump drive and could manufacture other ships.

My mothership won't have manufacturing capabilities, though it will have huge storage of some sort. It'll be accompanied by a fleet of ships; Escort warships, geo/jump point survey vessels, asteroid miners, fuel/other cargo storage ships, and perhaps extra civilian cryo vessels. I will then proceed to go on some epic search for a new planet.  8)

Turn on the sun warming thing to give yourself a time limit and actually build it ingame rather than using SM, then sail off with a few hundred thousand people and hope the rest are okay.

The only game where you could move entire planet populations I can think of is Stars!. It even had an Ethereral race, witch lived only on huge space stations.
I did made a couple of games where i would generate with race generator population that multiplied extremely slowly and had huge bonuses to production and I never colonized any planets. I would just remote - mine all the planets in the area, build vast armada and transport arks with the resources and lift the whole population and move to another suitable planet. You would eventually die because the AI would outproduct you.

I want a game where we can move the PLANETS, ala the puppeteer Fleet of Worlds.
