Yup, the all got destroyed... the 2end schmetterling nearly got into weapon range before its 50 cm gun was blown out the back, it really had a good chance there, but they got a lucky hit :I

well maybe if the 50cm gun had power it woulda helped...... lol sorry bout that I entirely didnt notice you had no powerplants.

well now you have a basic idea of how combat is ! armor up a bit more so you can actually close on the enemy.

Open question: How would shields work as a primary defense system? I am tempted to devote a lot of tonnage to shields instead of covering my ships in layers of armor, to see how it goes. Can you put multiple redundant shield generators on a ship?

yes.

early on its sorta horrible but each generation of shields adds an extra point of shield protection to the shield, so lvl 3 shield research gives you 3.0 shield strength.

the regen is sorta worthless but every bit helps. to stop some dmg i guess.

I havent tested having a nearly all shield ship but it couldnt work out so bad after around lvl 3 or 4 shield tech since each shield generator is only 50 ton...

but then again, armor gets better and better after each research level, lighter but covering same amount of area from damage, so who knows?

Hm, well I'll see how it works out then. I'm planning on never putting more than 2 layers of armor on any ship, but loading up on shields. :)

looking at the numbers probably armor is always gonna be 2x more cost effective, but armor doesnt regenerate.

shields at lvl 1 recharge take 900 seconds to recharge to full strength.

shields at lvl 3 recharge take 300 seconds to recharge to full strength.

so by lvl 6 recharge you should be getting something useful for recharge rate on shields in battle.

and if you have say 20 shield generators that take 300 seconds to recharge 3 dmg, thats 20 dmg repaired per 100 seconds since each shield regenerates at the same time. Not too bad thats like 2 mediocre missiles hitting you and it protecting you from them...

up that to 40 shield generators and you got 40 dmg repaired every 100 seconds, not too terrible at all...

I think im gonna do a heavy shield based ship now ^_^

edit-

ok and also dont forget about armour thickness

Armour is used for the hull of all ships. The amount of armour required is based on the size of the ship and the thickness of the armour. The thickness of the armour reduces incoming damage by that amount and is never damaged

Ummm I had a beta shield with 3 reg in those ships that got blown up.

It abosrbed a total of like 2 dmg in the whole fight, while the armor took something around 70...

Doesn't that only apply to damage which gets through the shield?

what i am saying is, if you had instead 10 of them they as a whole would have regenned a... noticeable amount of shield strength. 1 shield gen isnt going to do anything after the first missile hits.

and yea the armor gets hit after the shields... and I dont think shields leak damage, pretty sure they take all damage received then fail, then armor takes hits.

BUT if you had 11 thickness armor on your ships you would have never taken a single point of internal damage... or so it seems to mean.....

your armor could fail then the thickness alone would reduce all incoming damage by 11 as long as missile or weapon didnt do more than that?

I dont know i think i gotta find out on aurora forums :)

I think each hit burns off some armor though. Maybe. We need to test.

ok go find an enemy and send a scout at him with 20 lvl's of armor and see if any of their weapon attacks actually dmg the interior after the armor is burned through ^_^

Hah I would. Haven't hit an NPR in my current game yet. I remember reading that weapons have different damage profiles. Missiles tend to 'crater' gouging out armor in the armor sector hit and neighboring sectors. Lasers tend to cut deep but only damage the sector they hit. Etc

that is correct good sir, but that armour tech description just confused the hell out of me.
