Can you do anything with alien life pods?

You can collect them same as friendly pods.
Then you can torture and eat interrogate the canned lobstoids.

Boy! I just got called off (kinda like micro here) on the Au forum.
I was posting too much 'user error' bugs, because I was not using the game 'as intended'.
Heck, that IS playtesting! So much for being helpful. Was just an 'old hand' though, not Steve himself I annoyed. :p

Thanks but, how do you collect friendly pods? ><

Do you need a tractor beam or salvage module?

nah any ship will suffice. those are for wrecks.

just make lifepods visible, by checking the box (above the TF orders interface),
then select the lifepod as target, its associated tasks should appear in the orders options. double click or use the (alt-a)add order button.
repeat for other pods.

if you don't see any pods, there weren't any launched.
The enemy could be robotic or have claustrophobia.

I approached a thing marked 'LP3' with my jump ship and got no unique options. It was there in the system when I got there.

LP is like a JP but allows intra-system jumps to other LP only.

They appear at the lagging lagrange point of super jovian planets.
They can be a super handy in doublestar systems where distances can be astronomical.

you use them like JP, except they have you select a destination and then Addorder.
( does your ship have a jumpdrive?) not needed.

LP are great.

I have a gigantic binary star system that would take months to travel between (even with my 10,000 km/s speed ships) without the LP points. It takes a few extra clicks when I'm sending ships back and forth, but shaving 6 months off the trip is quite worth it.

maybe not enough contact yet?
Im not sure.
There are aliens that do not communicate.

I'll spoiler some of this stuff.
there are 3 alien types: NPR,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
.
I know the third allows you to try to communicate, which leads to nothing, but not always.
The second does not communicate at all.
The first is similar to your empire which allows for spying and diplomacy.

Though I'm not convinced NPRs understand any diplomacy besides laserfire as yet. I think this NPR intelligence is one of Steve's current projects.

I remember I had (had) a scout around their planet when I could (try to) communicate. It was immediately chased and destroyed once it moved away from the planet though, so a presence in the system was not required. (but  that might have changed since 3.8->3.9)

Keep us informed about your progress.

I think to befriend them you need to assign a good diplomacy team on your own planet then just stay out of their space. Over time the diplomacy team will raise your reputation with them, and after it reaches certain levels you can become neutral with them and eventually befriend them.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, the only NPR I found so far was the one who was intent on invading me so I just wiped him out and nuked all his worlds. I think it depends on the xenophobia and military ratings of the NPR you happen to find. If they're really aggressive and xenophobic you'll have a tough time doing anything but going all out war.

Joining game 199 if anyone else wants to play another game. 154 is getting a bit slow because I'm waiting for forces to assemble before I gank the AI's.
