I think a wondering empire may have to forgo research and pirate stuff from ruined out posts and leeching from  NPRs.

Steve was commenting that you'll need to give a good tech boost to the player race to really pull this off.

I do like the idea of engineering brigades being able to construct installations. Army Corp of Engineers can build just about anything with spit and a glare from superiors.

It would be so freaking awesome to have an almost fully cloaked massive 30 billion ton colony ship while having the entire galaxy trying to kill you, and then one of they scouts bump into you and suddenly a new planet shows up on their system map and their scout is gone and the planet disappears.

Well the highest level of cloak hides likes 5 percent of your mass, so a thirty million t ship will still light up on everyone scanner, and that not including the thermal thumb print.

Actually the highest level cloak hides 99.5% of your mass. So a 100000 ton ship would look like a 500 ton fighter. A 30 billion ton ship would still be 150 million tons, though - so still quite a sensor blip.

....you cant just keep cramming some sort of anti detection devices into your ship until it's invisible?

Some designs for the civilian part of such a wandering fleet, using just the starting allocation of research points.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'd expect it to take at least 100 years to build up a sufficiently large fleet using these. A good deal of time would be sunk into expanding the shipyards to a sufficient size. Which of course would imply higher levels of tech researched and incorporated over that time. If you took a smaller population say 50 million you could probably do it in around 20 years.

Of course you would also have to build your military part of the fleet as well.

No, there is no additional effect from multiple cloaking devices.

Ok i'm starting to think there is a limit to ship building.....You cant just make a ship carry 1 million cryo chambers, 1 million cargo holds, and 1 million of everything else and keep adding engines and crew quarters and stuff until it stabilizes?

No you cannot. For example, as you place more engines the speed the engine gives gets less and less.

I don't think your tug can carry your ship yards. The shipyard to build those monsters are 1.3mt. Even if it could, I think it'll be traveling at an extremely crawling pace, like double digits if that.

Although I havent messed with tugs to much.

Yeah, the design is more of a placeholder using the available tech. By the time you've managed to get a shipyard up to size and got the construction of other parts of the fleet underway, research should have pumped engine tech up to a point where the tug will be viable. It's pretty much always going to be the slowest part of the fleet when attached to the shipyard.

Edit:
Actually just did a copy of the tug and added 1.3m deadweight and still getting a speed of 1884 km/s.
So it looks like it should work well.
Edit 2: just FOOB's a tug and spaceyard, the speed is indeed 1884 for the pair combined.

Just out of curiosity, as I'm not playing this, but can you pull something with multiple tugs?  Or if not, have a tug chain, with tugs pulling tugs pulling stuff that need to be hauled?  If yes, would they increase speed and such?

Probably can. From how I understand tugging to work, it can tug anything in space. You may not be able to tug items that are moving under their own power though. I don't really know.
