My current new game from a conventional start has the limitation that any researchers can't research outside of their specialization. Had a good spread of 25%/20% scientists to start off with but my only weapons scientist died in an accident within a month so 15 years into the game and I have no weapons. At all. On the other hand I have very good armour/shields, sensors and engine tech so as soon as a weapons/missile scientist shows up I'll be able to make some fairly good ships.

Well, energy weapons and missiles are separate.  Unless you don't have either :P  In which case... try and outrun the enemy until they run out of fuel lol?

sadly ramming is prevented for player, otherwise armored fighters would be a lot of fun :P

Indeed, I have neither energy weapons nor missiles  :(. My current idea for a delaying tactic in case of encountering an enemy is a very fast ship with a big active sensor that will act as a lure and run the enemy around in circles occasionally refueling from a stealth tanker. I shall call it "Operation Benny Hill".

Lure them into a black hole or a star swarm!

I actually lost a few ships to a black hole.  They decrease speed by a certain amount depending on class of hole, and if it's too strong your ships get sucked in!  Should make for extremely interesting battles.

Steve hasn't included player ramming as he feels it would be overpowered.  Which it would.  Spam armor+engine+passive thermal and just bludgeon through everything.  That's the dwarven way.

Time to mod. If it's just a switch somewhere in the database, it should be no problem to change that to something more dorfish.

I tried to make an "automated terraformer" that would be less efficient than a regular one but wouldn't require population, but it didn't like that...

On a positive note, I could hypothetically make every planetside structure mobile.

I'd like some indigenous aliens... even the ones with acid blood would be cool.
They would be quite distractive though.  :-[

Well, that's probably not going to happen, sorry. The database simply doesn't have the tools I'd need to do that.

I got this philosophy that I should mainly specialize in the techs my best scientists have bonusses for.
Unfortunately they always seem to be fascinated by logistics and engines.
I've been wanting to roleplay a Prador/Dwarf Empire, maybe I should just SM in the researchers I want. :/

Logistics and Engines = boarding parties and ground troops galore >:) You could do that, especially with the highly advanced engines you would also have.  It doesn't mean you can't have some beam weapons, laser weapons, or missiles to supplement it of course.

That got me wondering about the viability of mass-boarding strategy: you don't build/research weapons on your own, you just build masses of fast combat transports and tons of battalions of marines, and spam board everything you run up against, using captured ships as your offensive fleet. Seems like a pretty fast route to failure, but it could be interesting...

I only once got enemy ships, and those were precurser troop transports from when i destroyed their listening post. But they had an annual failure rate around 9000% and if all enemy ships are like that, then using captured ships is not really an option. :(

Yes, NPR ship designs don't really pay any attention to maintainance as it is disabled for them.

Well he is definetely back on as he just responded to a post on the forums an hour ago.
