So... Uh... How would I go about designing a good carrier and a good fighter?
For a carrier you want it to have its own PD, some light weaponry, and a good shield to keep it from being taken out in one shot though it will need to stay back out of enemy range with maybe 1, or 2 escort frigates for added defense.

As for the fighters you want to make them as small as possible a box launcher, and 1 missile targeting system will work for weaponry though a single laser, and targeting system will also work. Now for the engine you are going to want to make it as powerful as possible, and make sure to give it the fighter only designation.

Him asking about asteroid miners and then carriers gave me a pretty neat idea:

A carrier that has a bunch of asteroid mining ships onboard!

The mining ships would be as small as possible.. one Asteroid Mining Module a piece, with limited engines and fuel, and rely on the Carrier to take them places.  The carrier would also carry any necessary Mass Drivers.  :o I wonder how well this would work..

If you are going to be using the carrier to move the mining ships around, don't bother giving them engines just the bare minimum crew/engineering. Your carrier will have to be huge though in order to carry any significant number of them.

Well, my geo team is finding assloads of minerals on Venus. We went from about 50 million tons total to 100 :D

In other words, some strange aliens appeared in Sol. They're bros, though. Atleast, they haven't shot at me yet so all's well. I'm also scoring +10 after +10 on my communication rolls. All I caught was a thermal signature (damn passives...) so I don't have the faintest idea what their tech level is.

EDIT: The "New Aberdeen Consciousness" is their name. Cool. :D

EDIT2: Those ships are gravsurvey vessels. They keep flying to my jump points, sitting there for a bit then going off somewhere else.

Carrying asteroid miners: Difficult, since hangars make it military and military ships are never as big as commercial.  I'd find it more viable to develop a very large asteroid miner, as these can be civilian and thus massive (even moreso if you add an orbital habitat and build it via industry instead) and then use a tug to pull it into place.

Huh. That just gave me an idea for a combined miner/orbital platform concept to deal with those moons that asteroid miners can't tackle: A large commercial vessel with mines, orbital modules to hold enough people to work the mines, and a cargo hold to carry the mines and extra space for the ore. No engines, instead a tug hauls it from moon to moon.

Drop the mines on the surface, your population in the habitat goes to work, when it's done it loads the minerals and mines into the bay, and calls the tug for a tow to the next one. Alternately, it could just leave the minerals on the surface for a cargo fleet to come get.

EDIT: YIKES. Nevermind. Orbital modules are freakin' enormous. What the hell is the point? Just to build a platform that could support *5* mines (250k population), you're up to 1.25 million tons. I'd never really played with orbital habitats and now I know why.  ???

You can build anything with habitats with industry, I believe.

Can you create a colony on a moon ? I really want to colonize Luna

EDIT: Also when I genned my world I got this error, Error 3201 was generated by DAO.recordset., what does that mean?

You can, but you can't have a population on it, because the gravity is far too low.  I have about 200 automated mines and a mass driver stripmining Luna as we speak, but you can't have manned mines or anything on it.

Now some moons (Titan, for example), you CAN colonize with people.  Its all about the gravity.  I think humans can tolerate a gravity of about 30% of Earths.  Thats non-genetically altered humans of course.

You might be stuck with a colony cost on some worlds because they don't have water. To have water you need a hydrosphere of either water (derp) or ice (to melt by increasing the temperature, turning it into a water hydrosphere).

No lacking water doesn't cause you to have a colony cost. What can leave you with a colony cost is moons like titan that cannot be warmed up sufficiently as there is an absolute cap of 3 times the base temperature in kelvin due to atmospheric warming.

Have you remembered to change/already have windows to use commas as seperators in numbers? So numbers are displayed as 10,000,000.00. Aurora won't work properly with the european tendancy to get them the other way round. Error 3201 is usually due to this.

How do I change that ?

on Win 7: control panel -> clock language and region > change the date time or number format > change the format to english

it is in a similar location for other versions of windows
