I think sensors above a certain size automatically boot ships over to the military side, also.

Jeeeez. The parts just get added to the in-progress ship, eh? Neat.

Mars is getting uneasy because they don't have enough living space and because they don't have enough military protection and because space is spacious and the dirt is red.

Mostly, it's just that they don't feel protected. How do I alleviate this?
No, you have to have the parts built before you start the construction iirc and they're taken from your stockpile when you task the shipyard. Its worth building up a stockpile of parts for common components like engines.

More civ ships are good. They help transport stuff, and they distract invaders.

Also, my first salvage ship has come off of the slipway. The name of this ship? The Kobold:D

The best part was that that was actually the random name that came up when I genned a new name for the class.
What theme?

I'm using the British theme; that name came from clicking the "Random name" button on the ship design screen. I tend to use that to mix it up, as I usually use either U.S. or British naming conventions so the officer ranks and system names aren't massively retarded or confusing, but the ship names get boring fast, so I mix it up.

Also, one way to help prevent civilian buildup is to make all ship designs military by using mil engines or adding an AS or something. Of course, that makes you take a big hit in maint, so...

Or just declare the design obsolete when you're not building them.

You can also mark the designs as obsolete, but I'm not sure what that does to active ships.

Edit: Ninjas up in here...

Why would you want to prevent civilian buildup?

Civilian ships seem pretty beneficial to me. They haul goods for you and create wealth via trade.

The only think it change is that you cannot retool shipyard to produce that class. It's okay if you do it once one of your shipyard can produce that class.

Too many civilians can massively slow down your game.

Wow... Well, I marked jumpgates off, but I still got native gates on all my points.

Also: Quaternary(?) system. 4 stars. Orbiting each other. Crazy. Classes:
-M5-V, 0.008 lum, 0.21 mass, 471k diameter.
-L5-VII, 1E-04 lum, 0.06 mass, 139k diameter.
-L8-VII, 1E-04 lum, 0.05 mass, 153k diameter.
-T0-VII, 1E-04 lum, 0.04 mass, 167k diameter.

That is one of the strangest systems I've ever seen. Only one habitable planet, too, what a shame.

EDIT: WHAT THE FUCK, HAS AURORA BEEN DROPPING ACID OR SOMETHING?!

The second system I entered HAD 4 STARS AS WELL. 3 terraform canidates in this one.

Because:

1. Sol is overcrowded, I can't even see the planets through the ship names

2. It makes the game run slow, especially when I have sol selected

3. they don't generate a significant amount of money

4. I can move my own damn stations when I need them moved, it gets done a LOT quicker since the civilians never seem to upgrade so half their ships are outdated garbage using nuclear thermal engines that putter along too slow.

Impound their ships via tractor beam then sell them for scrap.

Please tell me that finding two systems in a row with 4 stars isn't normal.  :o

I haven't had any issue with a civilian explosion yet. My current 17 year game only has one civ shipping line with 7 ships. They're all 5 cargo hold freighters. They haven't even built any colony ships yet, was going to make the cargo ships obsolete soon so they'll build colony ships. They built their first ship probably 10 years ago and have been slowly adding to them over time.

I guess if I get to the point where civs are producing hundreds of ships I'll want to prevent them from building, but so far they're nothing but useful.

The fact they don't retrofit to new designs is the only issue. You could probably use designer mode to scrap their old models if you wanted to though.

How does anyone learn to play this game? I've read through the tutorials on their forum but it only skips over topics and completely misses out ground troops, trading, interacting with aliens, combat, ground troops and politics! Do people just learn through trial and error?
