I began year 3000, am in year 3024 now. I have fully explored 10 systems and have 5 colonies, 4 of which are Earth-like. I have only encountered 2 NPC ships for some reason, of a race which coincidentally has the avatar of Predators, hahaha, and never responded to my diplomatic messages. I destroyed two of their ships and, upon geo-surveying the system they were in, found 3 ruins on the II planet of the A, B, and C star (Trinary star system, yep), all with ruined and destroyed outposts belonging to ANOTHER civilization called the Empire of Doneval.

I still haven't figured out where the Predator ships came from (missile-armed 100k ton ships o_O), and I'm still exploring.

VERY different from my last game... All 4 of my jumps contained super-advanced enemy races that eventually destroyed my ships and nuked the Earth, lol. This time around, everything's pretty calm.

Eh, they were too weak to be -spoiler-... My ships outshot and out-ranged them, and their speed was the same as mine. Generally, the -spoiler- have engine speeds at least 3x as much as mine, and out-shoot, out-maneuver, and out-gun me in every way. *shrug*

Are precursors really spoilers anymore? They're pretty much widespread knowledge to all the extreme newbies. Kinda like how Adamantine is to DF players.

The guys who come out of the pink circle thingies, however, are actual spoilers, since they were only introduced relatively recently. And still I'd believe they're pretty well known.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

This game seems like it could be incredibly fun but...... holy crap is it slow paced. Everything takes so long to build and research!

It's like 15 years (and 4+ RL hours) in and all I've got is a basic small amount of ships (a couple freighters and colonizers) and a (very small) colony on mercury (stupid me didn't realize automated mines were totally automated and mass drivers didn't need people so it's kind of a pointless colony). I'm just now starting to research jump drive theory (I assume that's what gets me to new stars) but it's going to be ~a year, plus a year to retool the shipyard, plus (probably) a year after that to actually build a ship with the sensor on it before I can even start looking for jump points.... then who knows before I can research/design/retool for a ship that actually has a jump drive and build that and explore another system.

Is that normal or should I have a multi-system empire going by now and I'm doing it wrong? (I did conventional start, fwiw)

With conventional starts, it can take a pretty long time. I tend to creep out *very* slowly. In my current run, I'm 75 years in, and it was more than 50 years before I headed into the great beyond. Plus, I tend to RP a mentality of "we're the only ones out here" until I make first contact with another race (with is inevitably hostile), and then it's "ohshitohshitohshit built guns!!!".

You can optimize a bit, or greatly increase your starting planet resources. (Optimizations include making as many of your minerals work for you as possible: if you know what size you're going to want your shipyards to get to, start expanding them immediately, and adding slipways. Build research labs as quickly as possible. Get geo survey ships up as quickly as possible so that you can get geo survey teams out there as quickly as possible. And so forth.)

Well, there are a number of varieties of -spoiler-, and they're not all created equal, or the same. I've definitely seen varieties of -spoiler- that I outspeed. Of them, the newest of the -spoiler- are the only ones that I find I cannot take pretty easily.

No, I mean give a spoilered description because I want to know what they are, hahaha!

I figured it'd be misunderstood, pardon my methods of communication.

WHAT? O_o

Spontaneously?

Bloody hell, that's bad! My entire 5-ship military is 6 or so jumps away where I found those ruins... I stuck on small runs because somewhere, some NPRs are fighting, but I'll send my ships home to Sol to keep us safe. I'm currently trying to get a shipyard capable to build a Dropship troop carrier so I can take an engineer regiment to the three ruins on Gliese A II, B II, and C II ((coincidence? They're all the colonizeable planets in that system)

I ran out of Sorium and one other material I need to make ships... And everything else on Earth, too. Only Duranium is still barely available. Its pissing me the hell off but luckily I set up a colony one system away and am -slowly- mining tiny amounts of everything there. There's a few hundred million in resources, F YEAH!, but the accessibility is mostly 0.1 to 0.4.

I'm going to spend the next year or two slowly transporting mines to the new colony, which I'm going to turn into my next Earth. Its just like Earth, atmosphere-wise, and I'll hopefully be able to get some factories on there.

Thanks, I keep thinking I'm doing something wrong since everything is taking so long, and I keep expecting a massive doom fleet to appear on my doorstep while I have nothing to defend with but the starting missile bases. I guess I've played too much MoO2 :p

Nice to know I'm not really super mega far behind.

Is the turn length really important? I understand long turn lengths can cause problems with combat and such, but would just mashing 30 day turns while I'm just building things up hurt me? (I've been doing 5 days since I read somewhere that factories and such work on 5 day cycles anyway). 30 day turns seem to go faster per day then 5 day turns so it would eat less RL time.

I did 1 day turns the first 5 years then I went to 30. I queue a lot to make sure I don't miss productivity, and 30 days isn't an issue cause the game will pause if anything happens. Factory work though, that doesn't pause you.

I have everything turned on, except for maintenance. I can't be assed to keep up with maintenance, though I always include engineering to keep maintenance down and still have the habit or ordering seasonal maint/fuel resupply runs, haha
