Well there's an Empire and an Alien Race (there seem to be a difference between both), I deleted the Alien Race that's being bombarded somehow..but the fight and their units keeps on.

It's like if one of them is a real empire with a population, and the other one is an alien race stuck on a planet...

I wish I could delete both, this is pissing me off.

I give up. I'm starting another game, the aliens Ground Forces were targeting their own planet and firing there. Also, one of their ships was doing the same thing.
What the hell?

It honestly feels like a lot of their problems came from the fact that their entire team was composed of cats, and the people who were supposed to be herding them were also cats.

No way I'm giving up.
I deleted their whole damn system.

The SM Event View shows they were targeting their PLANET and firing, with ground forces.
What the hell?

EDIT:
Steve (if you read this), have you ever seen anything like this happen?

Everything is okay now :)

That is a lot of ships, but all sorta small. Did you do a conventional start? I would try to place a deep space tracking instaltion in system to get some further intel to see how fast they can go, and possibly get a hand on their active sensor strength. With the tonnage, you may have a tech advantage over them.

I'm pretty sure those are missiles, actually.

Well, do ships auto-fire missiles at an enemy?

I dont think they can be missiles at 800 tons. From what I've seen of other screen captures is that they group missiles together with their name x (# in group), those listing match those of id'ing individual ships, and NPR from what I gleamed off the forum do not make use of the way point feature for missles and therefore they would be moving, and there no speed on the read out, so they are orbiting or landed on the planet.

However you can design missiles that large though.

You're right, I'd never seen a missile salvo before.

Speaking of, my geological survey team got their first casualty just now from a planetary missile salvo - I'm guessing precursor, because I didn't detect anything else near the planet.

With the small tonnage, I dont think they are combat ships. Further intel is needed. It might be advantageous to do an active sensor scan of them to get more precise information, although I cant be sure, but it seems you do have it currently active, so you should be able to get some intel off of them.

They could be fighters.

In spite of all my playtime, I'm still confused on the "where do I design and build fighters?" vs regular ships and missiles, because I got the rest of that figured out.

I have a hunch that you design them the same as other ships while just keeping their tonnage below a certain number (1000 or something I think), but I could be wrong.

I was just screwing around in a new savegame and gave myself every single piece of research ever. Apparently from what I can tell you need to research the "fighter engine (max one per ship)" and then when you put that engine on a ship it will be classed as a fighter. This is probably where small-size weapons come in, and the "small crew quarters" and other such small things.

Apparently with the smallest missile launcher size you can easily mount missile launchers on fighter craft but they are 1 shot each, but will rearm once docked at a ship. =P must take a while to research though.

Alright I'm going to start again, and I would like some advice from those of you who are better than me:

What are easy things to do when you just start a new game?

@Ozy: I kind of figured that, but I thought it would have it's own section or be more intuitive or something. Smallest crew component I've seen is 20.

@emperorjon: set the governor of earth. Earth will need anywhere from a class 3-6 gov depending on how you start. Pick any guy that qualified from the civil administrator's pulldown. Person left column, earth middle column, then assign. Choose a guy who has nice bonuses. Sometimes the highest rank isn't the best.

Press F9 and see if you can set any mining colonies anywhere in your first system.

Then start research, F2 research tab. See the bonus of the top scientist, then choose the dropdown that corresponds to that and research what you need. You will get a huge research boost in matching bonuses. After researching you can design ship parts and ships, research the prototype tech, then start building ships. That should get you started.
