I use expendable 800 ton survey ships, or sometimes just long range drones with survey buoys.
Very early I sometimes use the expendable version, but later on, I tend to use jumpcapable craft with experienced crew as well.
Never went for the heavy 'Enterprise' explorer concept; too much fuel cost.
Never used buoys or drones, for survey purposes, yet it sounds cool.

-found jumpgates are usually singletons, forming traps for your (cheap)surveyships and intrastellar cargo.
That's why I make both my geosurveyors and gravsurveyors jump capable. A very small and cheap self jump drive is awesome to have.
You could also have them work in teams of 3 and have only 1 ship with a group jump drive.

Not really, but there is quite a lot of useful information in the Academy board of the Aurora forums.

Are there some ways to speed up the game? It takes really long after some time into the game even without short increments due to stuff happening elsewhere. I think it is because of the ever growing civilian shipping lines. This is truly DF in space...  :o

I wish the game would speed up too. Maybe we could put up a suggestion on the aurora forums and +1 it all around?

And now that I wrote this, I'm trapped in short increments, argh!

I believe if you check the auto-turns in the right hand corner it should play how ever many turns it needs to reach 5 days (useful when aliens are fighting each other off screen)

Well, I have that activated but that just means that I can't access anything until whatever situation is occuring right now is resolved because the Interface is completely unresponsive.
...
Now it's finished, I had lots of 60 second time increments, took freaking forever...  :-\

Yeah, it locks up my game for a long time too. Not the best solution, but it was much more annoying back before they added the option in!

and they were too big to go back through the gate
Wait what? I was fairly sure any ship could fit through jump gates. Are you sure the other side had a gate as well?
Well, after I finished the second gate on the other side the ships were actually capable of going through, yet before I finished it they weren't.

But for that I would need to make the jump drive much bigger, as I couldn't use a Size 5 self jump only, drive (with the most basic tech), plus it would mean they are stuck with each other, and when I need to resupply and possibly overhaul the grav surveyor, everyone would need to go back. With everyone being able to jump I can just send the ships wherever they are needed. If a system needs only gravitational, I send a few of them. If there's a few hundred bodies, I can simply move a few of the geo surveyors to it.

That's because you need a gate on both sides. It wasn't that they were too big, just that there was no gate on that end.

Also: Has anyone else spotted the Lagrange points which allow intra-system jumps? I just came across that, seems to be somewhat rare?

I've seen them before too. They're not just rare because they don't often occur, but because if I remember correctly they need at least two large Gas Giants to spawn.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.
Quote from: Ze Spy
Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

"Survey Task Group cannot carry out its order as at least one ship is larger than the ship with the highest jump rating. No friendly or allied ships are available for escort"

Since there is only 1 ship in the task group, how do I increase the jump rating?

Does that one ship have a jump drive, or the jump point it's attempting to use have a jump gate? If not, it can't go through, and you'll have to design a survey ship with a jump drive.
