I might have asked this before but is this game still unplayable with a 1600x900 screen?

there is a reduced height mode now that is good for monitor down to 800 height. I can play it on my laptop just fine, if I get the taskbar out of the way :P

yup, I can't get through the tutorial at all without crashing. frustrating to say the least when you can't even design the most basic sensor package without it crashing.

uh, I don't know what I did but I went trough fine. did you follow all the hidden step of installation?

like extracting the aurora491.zip in the install directory after the setup and downloading&registering the missing dll?

yes and yes. It might be something to do with Vista 64Bit, but the error I'm getting suggests database problems, rather than installation.

which error? I'm on vista 64, there is some problem, but I've not encountered a game breaking bug.

Oh for gods sake, I've just tried it again, and got it to work this time.

here's how to crash it:

  • new game, turn off assign RP, nothing else changed.
  • start the new game, turn on SM mode (ctrl+s), open economics window
  • open the tech design window (design button), TYPE the number 2 in size, then select 100 ton min res.
  • crash

now what I completely didn't see is that the size selection is a dropdown. I assumed that because I can type in it directly, that was what I should do.
use the drop down in stead of typing, and it works... damnit.

still I'm going to post this info as an addendum to my bug report. As a programmer myself, I know the importance of sanitising input, and if the program allows the user to edit directly, it should honour that editing, and not just crash.

Actually, I was also curious about multiple empires on the same planet.

Yeah I'm totally going to play as a Terran independent colony someday, this game is so full of potential and so flexible you can play in almost any space film or cartoon setting ever made.

With some setup effort  :P

Haven't played in about a year... did they ever fix that issue where when two AIs were fighting you could only advance time 5 seconds at a time until they were done? If so, I'd check it out again.

I've played around with multi-empire homeworlds (working on a scenario where the US, China and EU are all in a race for exploration and exploitation). It can be done, but it takes some work in SM mode. One thing I've discovered is that you need to gin up some diplomatic officers and create diplo teams between all the factions to keep their relations stable. Because by default unless you've got them all allied, they're going to take a constant hit to relations because the AI thinks "Hey, you're in my system!"

The other is that if you want the computer to control the other factions, they have to be generated as trans-Newtonian empires. The AI simply doesn't do anything with conventional empires, other than build ground units.

So, that makes me wonder:

if a non-newtonian empire defeats a newtonian empire it shares its homeworld with, could it acquire TN tech?
(I've never managed to conquer a planet myself)
