No, that shouldn't ever happen. Did your ships have a senor malfunction?

Sorry, I probably could have worded that better - I ment that survey teams that are on comets or asteroids can sometimes take years between finding new deposits of minerals.

Mind you, getting more minerals really isn't where survey teams shine - it's when they upgrade the accessibility of that 20,000,000 deposit from .1 to .6 which is when a high level team is worth its weight in gold.

Anyway, I suggest you don't train Geosurvey teams on earth anymore, since the chance of the survey being "complete" is higher with an unskilled team. Train them on the moon or some other body.

This is the one thing I can't stand about the game.  The amount of resources present on a world is based purely on the first team to survey it.  It's not like a crummy scanner vaporizes big hunks of rock.

Hell, it almost makes it a good strategy to send unskilled surveyors out to deny NPRs resources.  "Oh, better not mine here, the humans came by and said there's nothing in the planet."
I thought the survey status was tracked per empire? Don't the NPR do their own surveys? I doubt that if you survey a world it also marks it surveyed for them, just as geosurvey ships don't reveal minerals to the NPR (as far as I know).

I agree that its unrealistic, but it isn't a bad system really and rewards training good survey teams.

I don't know what kind of HUGE freeken survey ships you build. But the ones I have would be worth several times their own worth in gold.

...Okay. He's not talking about survey ships, he's talking about survey teams.

while trying to colonize a nerby system, which had a 0 cost world, I was attacked by a couple of enemy ships, who destroyed my colony fleet with missiles ( or other kinetic weapons).
since that world had a LOT of tritanium, which can't be found in Sol except  in traces found in asteroid, I decided to create a fleet and attack.
now, after my ships could target the enemies, I get a message saying

Error in fireallweapons
error 94 generated by aurora
invalid use of null

is it something created by an error of mine, or is it a bug? what could cause it, and how can I fix it before my fleet gets destroyed?

What kinds of wepons are your fleet using? Beams or Missiles?

Missiles?
1) Have you assigned the launchers to the fire control?
2) Have you assigned missiles to the launchers?
3) Have you assigned a target to the fire control?

Beams?
1) Have you assigned your beam to the fire control?
2) Have you assigned a target to the fire control?

I had beams, and I probably missed one of those steps. after a while, in the events I could see directly that they didn't fire because they had 0% chance to hit ( possibly too far, but probably also because of enemy ECM).

unluckily, the error keeps happening. even after all ships got destroyed....
also, playing with "minimum increments" got me into an endless stream of forced 30 seconds turns... great. it it goes on like this, I'll have to start a new campaign.

oh, and next time I will remember to put sensors on my missile ships BEFORE building them. The 2 I had were only useful as meat shields :(

I didn't even know I should've not used my survey team on Earth. It makes sense. I assume I should wait until I have a higher level team built up and then bring them to Earth to try to get the amount/access higher? I'm not really sure how they work, it's not explained too well on the wiki.

Also, do I need to have a body set as a colony before I can just drop off a mine? Like, if I survey the moon and want to drop a mine there, will it work? Same for Mars?

Is there a more efficient way to get a new colony up and running with construction? I got my initial group of colonists to Mars and dropped a construction yard but I notice it'll take a huge amount of time to finish the next yard. Is it easier to send mines via transports or to drop more construction yards?

Also, anyone ever get some weird loop where you can add any branches to your default TF? I had some weird mixup a few games ago that basically meant I couldn't assign a branch because I blew up the TF's.... Okay, I just started from scratch since it was a newer world.

But now, even after I replaced the MDF file with the one from patch 540, I still can't add a branch to the Fleet Headquarters group.

"Please select a task force or branch on the org chart to which you wish to add a sub-branch". And I know how to at least highlight the damned TF on the list. Any ideas?

Edit: The above issue seems to have cleared up after opening another save that came with the MDB and starting over.

On another note, how does hyperspace work, exactly? Do you need to have jump points setup? What is the difference between a standard engine with a hyperspace engine in it and a jump engine?

The hyper engines allow ships to move very fast in normal space, but while they are, they're blind and cannot shoot. You also cannot use them too close to a star. I've actually never used them, but apparently they're for exploring the binary systems that are insanely far way (I've seen some more than a lightyear.)

Yep. There's a formula somewhere on the forum... but I can't find it anymore.

Send mines from earth, if you've got less factories on mars.

Possibly silly question but: When designing a jump drive, does the drive's 'max size' have to equal or exceed the ship you're putting it on? or is that only used for the size of ship that can follow through the jump point?
