Pfft, over here 20 tons is monstrous. Space truckers.

..Yeah I meant 20k tons. My biggest ship is 18000 tons, the rest are around 6000 except for my jump cruiser which is right around 9500 tons. This is my first game though and I don't know how combat effective they are considering they haven't been armed for battle..

Another tidbit, I named my first gauss cannon 'Apple iGauss 1.0' heh heh heh

Questions on civilian economy. If I keep feeding it, will they do anything other then build mining colonies and make commercial ships?
Nope, that's all they do.  However, Steve showed a screenshot from one of his games in which commercial income - trade goods and colonists - was providing about 40% of his total income.  He had hundreds of freighters and colony ships running between his five or so 100m+ colonies and was absolutely rolling in cash.  I have never managed to duplicate that, my civilian sector are always anemic layabouts who fritter away all my subsidies in dividends before buying any ships! They pay themselves gigantic bonuses and do fuck all for society. Grr.

So it's simulating real life then?

I have two companies who seem to be pretty productive. I'm only 6 years into my game though.. They like running cargo with my tanker class for some reason and ferrying colonists with my super huge colony ships.

Does your tanker have cargo bays?

Yeah it has one, but my Cargo ship has like 5. Maybe they're just being cheap.

The civilian sector is a bit daft, they identify ship types by the equipment on them so if they see a ship with cargo bays and no military systems they assume it's a cargo ship. As far as it knows a large fuel storage could just indicate a long range ship.

I'm hoping Steve adds an "Available for Civilian Purchase" checkbox to the ship design screen for commercial ships.

I hope Steve adds rebellions, Mars got super pissed at me for not having troops there once and it would have been awesome if they had rebelled.

This! My dream is to establish a far-reaching star empire, and then let it collapse and watch the pieces got to war with each other and evolve their own competing tech while I play them off against each other from the Imperial Remnant worlds.

Hey Aurorians,

I've searched high and low for some basic info, but what exactly do the missile bases do that are present at the start of a convential game? I have 20 bases on Earth, I didn't know if they were a leftover from the previous era of Earth warfare or what.

Also, I read some of Steve's campaigns on the fiction forum and he seems to have multiple factions on Earth, how is that possible? Spacemaster mode?

Thanks!

Those missile bases are ICBM silos, the pinnacle of pre-TN weapons technology and a total laugh-fest of inadequacy by TN standards. They're pretty damned useless.  Also, yeah, you can create multiple player factions using SM mode should you desire to do so. Steve's fiction often has multiple competing Earth powers going out into the universe while still having conflicts back home.

Thanks for the info Narmio. Is there a working Wiki somewhere? I can't find any URL's. The tutorials are great, but it's difficult to find something you need info on in a pinch, like if I want to look up a certain installation or something like that.

Is it at all helpful as a beginner to the game to start out pre-Trans-Newtonian tech?

Also, I think conventional missile bases are exactly what you said, a leftover from the previous era.
I've never tried a pre-TN start but I think it's a "hard-mode" and not for beginners.
