Not quite.

Colonies require infrastructure in order to support populations. The higher the colony cost number, the more required. If you simply drop folks off on an airless rock, they'll quickly start dieing.

Like everything else in this game, you need large numbers to really affect stuff. Try dropping about 200 infrastructure, and see how many people that can support. You will probably require more, unless the colony is very low-cost. Colonies with a cost of 0.00 do not require infrastructure at all.

EDIT: Beat me again, Tarran you ninja you :P

Well, if you have a civilian sector, they'll bring infrastructures and colonists. You jsut need to "seed" the world with a few colonists/infrastructures, and they'll do the rest.

They're also extremely slow about adding the new 'free' infrastructure.

It depends on how much ships they have. My colony on Mars went up to 70 millions people without me doing anything. My colonies on other systems went up to 10 millions peoples quite quickly too. With contracts, it's so easy to create a new colony that I just seed every world with a colonization cost of less than 3.

I don't think you can move pre-fabed PDCs.

how many years does it take, sheb? i haven't seen any free infrastructure so far. but I have only had a colony for 5 years, more or less. may be too little time, or too smal population.

The civilians need freighters first, and to get freighters they need a finished design and enough money. My civs don't yet have a freighter, but they do have a colony ship, so I'm not sure what determines when they get ships.

With contracts yes, I'm talking about the free infrastructure that populations generate on their own, not what you build and have them ship there.

You can move prefab PDC parts to another location before building them. That is the whole point of prefab.

Things just turned sour as shit for the United Earth Nations.

While surveying outlying systems, my survey ship SS Tactical picked up a signal from two alien ships. Now, I got all excited thinking I was about to make new friends so I sent a little message saying "Hello! We're from Earth, wanna be friends?" Well apparently they have a foreign policy that's more along the lines of "fuck off and die" 'cause they blew the SS Tactical away 5 seconds after the message was sent.

So naturally, I got angry and renamed the aliens "Fuck-heads" and sent two fresh warships to "load Ordinance at Earth" and be on their merry little way and blow the shit out of space's new-found dickheads. Well, by the time they got to the aliens I realized neither of my ships picked up missiles at Earth. I could only imagine the situation:

Captain: There they are. Ready the missiles!
Lieutenant: Sir, we don't have any missiles..
Captain: What do you mean we don't have any missiles! We were on Earth for two days!
Lieutenant: ....  8)
Captain: Ffffffffuuuuuuuuu
*explosion"

Seems my post disappeared :/

If I pour money into my civilian economy, will they ever do anything other then building commercial ships and mining colonies?

Yeah, missiles usually take ten days to load, lol.

Aliens tend to attack anything in their system.  It's basically a race to scan their colony before your ship is destroyed, then you communicate from different sides of the jump point.

The answer was no, but those tasks are awesome.

Hmmmm? I can begin communications just by spotting one of their ships.

I request a crash course guide to learning this game, tomorrow is Friday (best day of the week, FYI) and I want to get into this game.

As far as I can tell, the aliens didn't inhabit the system I was in. So in my mind they're invaders, I was there first. Even if I have to cheat they're all gonna die.

Also, is there any good way to design a 20 ton ship with jump drive capabilities without having construction take 5 years? I would assume better technology but maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Double also, what is the average size of your warships?

I don't think you can make a 20 ton ship at all... do you mean 20,000 tons?

My current warship designs, very low tech mind you, are coming in around 5500 tons.
