I have three colonies in Alpha Centauri. Probably not my best move, but with five terraformed colonies now I'm getting tons of money in taxes. Low pop planets breed like mad. Time to build up some beam warships (I'm going to try without missiles, just to see if I can) and sweep Sirius for Precursor tech and hopefully a Sorium gas giant.

Any advice for dealing with precursors, aside from Losing is Fun?

PD Gauss, without PD missiles the next best thing is Gauss, if not, then Lasers.

ECM will likely do nothing since they will likely have very high ECCM, make your ships fast so you can catch up to retreating/moving ships, shields won't do anything since the Precursors have overwhelming firepower, go with armor, get yourself some ECCM since they could have ECM, never engage in a ship dual (one on one), as they will very likely win, and double check your systems, as one mistake like a very short FC could doom your ships.

But that's just me. :)

So if I read that right:

Swarm them
Heavy armor (I'm working on Biphase Carbide)
Don't bother with shields
Don't bother with ECM, but ECCM is worth investing in
Heavy point defense (using lasers, but with missile tracking and a dedicated sensor ship with a HUGE zero res sensor I should get a good targeting bonus)
Try to blast them with lots of long range beam weapons.

I presume that burst damage is more important than DPS? Since static armor is involved, a 40 cm laser cannon would probably be more effective than a 30 cm cannon even if the 40 cm cannon does slightly less damage per second (particularly when it comes to boring through armor) right?

Hopefully they aren't using a lot of missiles. I only saw one missile barrage when I scouted the system, so it's promising. I think with lots of long range, high caliber lasers and some dedicated point defense, I'll do ok.

It seems that fighters equipped with box launchers can swarm them effectively and because fighter are not made in ship yards they get made faster allowing bigger swarms. Also any missile that takes out a fighter is a missile that is not damaging you real ships.

Just be careful, they like to use (slow reloading, small) missile launchers on gunships, they can ruin your day if you are unlucky.

And having your main anti-ship weapons as temporary PD might increase the survival chance of your ships, but only by a little bit.

I think that comes from us improving it here and there. Really I have looked around and most of the games that are popular in the Other Games section tend to get a wiki facelift.

I'm not surprised.  The Bay 12 community did build a truly fantastic (seriously, it's incredibly thorough) wiki for as arcane a game as Dwarf Fortress.

Actually, I just assume Bay 12 did the majority of the DF wiki.  That's probably a fair assumption, though.  :P

I think they might do learn a bit, not taskforce training, but crew skill increases (a bit) from just flying about on duties.
