To jump start shipping lines make sure you actually have another colony with civilians present on it.

I also always donate 50k to the first shipping line that I get.

Not required. The civilians present part, that is.

You just need another viable colony or have the civilians start up an asteroid mining colony.

The only way I know of to increase your odds of getting more civvie stuff is to research the 'expand civilian sector' project. In my game its been 30 years now and I still have only 1 shipping line. It's a rich mother, with 8 cargo ships, and its doing fine with no competition. I'm kinda hoping for another line to pop up at some point.

Turns out the civvies woke up even before the first colonists made it to Mars. They managed to launch two freighters and one colony ship within 6 months. They're working just fine now. :)

Now, several months later, I've begun construction of my first jumpgate! :o

Well, there is a tracking bonus you get to accuracy if you lock onto a ship/target with an FC and don't shoot for a turn or so.  So I normally don't complain about people having more FC range then weapon range, since I do it myself.
Not too sure where the actual source of this information is, but a tracking bonus thing is mentioned in-game in the F3 System Map Screen, Contacts tab.

There is also a mention in the research screen, you can increase the tracking bonus you get via research


As for speed, seeing how macrotastic you are...  doesn't seem like it would hurt to shave off a few armours and put another engine or two..  At least shoot for a minimum speed so that your slightly faster ships won't be slowed down too much if you group different ship types together.


Yea actually i fixed my fleet speed to all be 2k again, when i redesigned my star knight with an extra 5k tonnage it slowed it down alot. hence making it look alot slower than the rest of my ships... heh

But still engines arent worth it after 10 it seems, they only add a couple hundred km/s with each one and then your just wasting all that tonnage that could be armor or weapons...

There must be a Sweet Spot.

Alright so I finally get back in a game...   hilarity ensues: 
My exploration/war group comes up right next to 2 ships that are 5-6x bigger then mine, my fleet is all 2500 tons.  These squid faced people. 
They don't immediately fire, but set as hostile in diplo, so I decided to power down my AS and stop my ships.  They bring up a sensor for +3k size ships.

So I decided to try sitting there, hoping their AS don't see me.  Dead wrong.  Too close...  They shot missiles basically point blank on one of my ships.

Squid people ships, about 10k speed.  Squid people missiles, 42k.  My speed?  2,880.

On another note, the good news is my PD somehow takes out 15 out of 20 missiles from each volley...  and the bad news... 5 out of 20 missiles get past my PD.  It just gets worse with each ship I lose...

There went a good portion of my 'elite'...  but at least there were some survivors...  Spent a good 5 or so years training em.

I need more tech, I'm still on Ion Engine technology.

Using 2 Ion Engines per 2,500 ton ship.  Its... a damned wonder that these ships can even go 2,880... >.>

Basically new game cheat: Get all 12,001 RP and under researched so I can just build 'now'.  But then, with this, I havn't bothered to use my research things...  so I'm keeping on this tech level. Only way I'll acquire new ones is from other means.  No matter how many super civs I encounter...

I had a second skirmish, I'm pretty sure both are Precurors now.  The number of 1 damage missiles lobbed at me...  just wow.... overwhelming my defenses and slowly killing off my ships.  1 surviving officer this time...  only 1.  The poor sod got the Survivor's Medal. 

Plus, they have ECM 50.  How do I know?  Pure luck.
They had some railgun ships with em. So they moved into melee range where by fail luck...  I killed off the melee ships and not the missile ships.

haha :)

that is some bad luck that you killed the melee ships, were you using that crappy auto target system? deem your own targets then spread those targets across the whole task group after you do 1. Simple and as long as you know what ship is firing what, helps big time.

Yup heh, i made the mistake of expecting auto fire to work with my PD turrets when i first downloaded 5.01.

ha ha ha, i lost half my fleet against a precursor missile strike of doom, the entire fleet just about died before they limped back to the jump gate.

how have you done with boarding ships as of yet?

I have designed them but havent used them yet since im sorta confused on how im gonna make it work.
