Sticking to lasers will very likely end up with you losing badly against anything with missiles long before you get in range to even fire.

It only be temporary though, sticking to laser designs wouldn't be permanent. Just for a little while, until Quill18 starts designing missiles. Imgur, written guides and the one youtube video I found on designing missiles and missile ships just made it more confusing to me. I think quill18 will do a really good job on giving info on how to actually do it, but for now I'd rather just stick to basic laser ships until then.

Do you understand Point Defense, so your Lasers can shoot enemy Missiles?

I think so. I did design meson turrets for anti-missiles, which was part of the imgur guide. But when I put them on my PDC it says they have 0 KM range, even though when designing them they said they had a lot more than that. And I got the research for more range. But I might have done something wrong there. Or maybe meson turrets just have super short range lol.

A lot of the info was really helpful. Turns out I kinda need to micromanage it a bit, and would be easier in systems with just one colony. Giving them an actual task to deposit 90% fuel doesn't actually work properly, which was probably why it was so confusing for me at first. Gotta give it an actual "order" to deposit 90% at a nearby colony, but that doesn't help if I want to send it to actually Earth :P

Does a pair of jump gates being built indicate anything? When I've found them before I assumed they were part of some transport network, but this time I found one connecting Sol to another system, but there's only one gate in the Sol system.

It's highly likely that the reason they are showing 0 range is that you haven't placed a Beam Firecontrol on the ship.

Also Mesons aren't really a particularly good choice for point-defence duty. Lasers are better if you want to possibly get multiple shots at incoming salvoes through Area Defence(generally requires you to have a tech advantage over the enemy missile speed or using formations for outriding pd) or for dealing with armoured missiles. Gauss(at least once you hit fire rate 3) are the best for putting sheer number of shots against incoming salvoes.

edit: Derp, just saw you were putting PD on a PDC, not ship. In that case, if the body the PDC is on has an appreciable atmosphere, Mesons are indeed the only form of functional beam PD, as they ignore atmosphere. Do remember when designing your beam firecontrol for it that you can make the component specified for PDC's which increases it's range without effecting size.

Jump Points can randomly be generated with Jump Gates already built. Note that this is generated per system, so a point with a gate may not have one on the point in the connected system.

Of course, if you have Gates appearing that weren't there previously, you either have Invaders or an industrious NPR building gates.

Mesons are actually great at shooting down missiles, as they ignore armor, so even armored missiles will go down very quickly.  A handful of quad-turrets can be quite potent.

Personally I like CIWS for missile defense, as I tend to put a lot of effort onto one ship, so I know what's getting shot, so I know how to protect it most cheaply/effectively.

Although it sounds like Mars will be engulfed in Nuclear Love with that setup.
Sadly I'm following wh40 canon in Which at this time period mars essentially gave up and joined the imperium bloodlessly. Though later on heresy takes hold which must be out down by force.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

You researched the gauss turrets and fire control, correct? Pretty sure once you design them, you need to research them.

But if you did that, I can't be much help. I think this happened with some of my very first initial missile designs (think it was the missile launchers) and couldn't figure it out exactly. So I had to redesign them. But yeah, make sure they are researched after you design them and if they are, I'm sure someone else can be much better help :)

ah I see. Thats weird then. I haven't made gauss stuff yet, but there must be something missing in the launcher or the turret. But I dunno what that could be or what the issue actually is if you made it right.

Oh, looks like I actually put the missile FC on twice instead of one of each like I'd intended. Whoops.

EDIT: But now that I've fixed that really stupid problem, I notice that none of my active sensors seem to be picking up any contacts, even when they should be well able to. Unless there's something that prevents you from seeing friendlies as contacts beyond the "Show Hostile Contacts Only" button.

I'm reasonably certain that friendlies dont show up in fire control targeting if thats what you mean.
