I prefer to call them after whatever the hell role they're being used for anyway. Though small craft need to be fast for defence anyway.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

I call my non-fast 1000 ton craft Patrol Boats :)

Just to add another term to the mix.

So i am back from doing some experimentation using otherwise featureless Gravitational Survey "fighters" and cramming them into my jump carriers. And by the looks of things, it actually seems to be rather effective. The fuel efficiency issue is marginal, as i make my jump carrier engines economical, and the added flexibility of being able to plug in some escort fighters is useful too.

Survey fighters work just fine, the only problem I had was you either have to micromanage launching and refueling, or just give the carrier itself orders to survey and risk having it ambushed by enemies.

Actually, i deliberately use the carriers as grav survey ships, as they are quite small. I am currently wondering whether i should use microwave or meson fighters with it. Railguns are definitely a consideration for PD, as my gauss tech is somewhat low.

If you fighter you're committing to micro.

Gauss fighters.

I actually never really liked gauss fighters. Sure, you can make them small, but in return they get totally anemic damage and accuracy. Compared to railgun fighters, they might be half the size, but they have less than a quarter the damage output. And on the defense, that damage output translates directly to missile stopping ability. Mesons lack the damage, but can gut capital ships like nothing else.

I generally use railguns for a space superiority/anti-missile beam fighter, and mesons for bombers/heavy attack type designs.

Gauss fighters are meant to be used at zero range, where accuracy is nearly perfect.

Not for Gauss. They get reduced accuracy for small size (and a full accuracy gauss is much larger than a railgun), and that low accuracy carries over even at point blank range.

I've been trying to get into this game for years. Love the idea of the custom ships, but I keep hitting two big walls and am wondering if people either have tips or if things have changed in the past couple of years or so.

One is resources. I feel like sending everything in a solar system to one planet is a good idea, but it feels like eventually the resources in a solar system will disappear, and quicker than I would of liked, leaving it as something to just ignore.

Second is the battles. I've searched 4-5 systems but usually never find anything, and at the same time an having time slowed down by other battles, which makes the tedious expansion take even longer, and I end up losing interest.

Try starting with no NPRs, but up the spawn rate and difficulty, you should find something eventually, and it'll be faster with no NPRs, swarm, invaders, civilians (fuck trade).
