Turns out the game just wanted to say the whole fleet was there when it wasn't, and it stopped after I had one ship abandoned. I also figured out the problem with the Venus automated mines: the ships were carrying 0.2 automated mines at a time so it'll take a few trips to build all of them there.

Make sure you're using standard cargo holds and not the small ones. Standards have 25,000 tons of capacity, which is enough for a single 'normal' sized facility (aka mines, factories, refineries, &c.).

The early game tends to run rather slowly, so larger time increments or small batches of 5 day increments are your friend.
I typically run with 6 5 day in relents as standard until I need to micromanage fleet movements or whatever.
5 days rather than 30 days seems to help with trade for some reason.

Because trading ships don't update their orders between ticks. So with a 30-days interval, you'll get at most 1 trade trip per 30 day. With 6 5-days intervals, you'll get up to 6.

Someone explained that to me once. Trade ships can only decide on new orders at every increment, so if it takes a ship 13 days to go from planet A to planet B and you advance time by 30 days, it moves to planet B and sits there for the remaining 17 days doing nothing. The same 30 days done in 5 day increments would allow the trader to perform 2 runs instead.

And I got ninja'd.

I think th3 same applies to survey ships on default orders. If takes them a set amount of time that's less than thirty days to survey a body, they'll just wait around the body they just surveyed and waste fuel.

They'll just waste time and maintenance supply, they don't need fuel to orbit a body.

IIRC it lets you build on asteroids with a gravity too low to support a normal colony.

It lets you build special, unmovable, infrastructure anywhere that provide habitation at a colony cost 4 rate, largely no matter what the target bodies stats are.  You can put em on asteroids, Mercurial and Venusian.  Just not gas giants though.

In 6.40, how do you assign engines as civilian? I was using 5.40 and it always had the pull down menu to select it's class... I've seen the error of my ways.

Engines that are both large and efficient will be classed as civilian.
Specifically, a power rating of x0.5 or lower and a size of 25HS or larger.
