Indeed you can do the nomad fleet using orbital habitats, but you will almost certainly have to build and use jumpgates in order to be able to transit your habitation ships and your towed shipyards.

Is there a way to see at a glance which task groups don't currently have orders?

Apart from just checking them? Not really. It isn't exactly difficult to scroll down the list, though.

Aurora on small monitors:
1. Game Parameters -> Reduced Height Windows.
2. Lock taskbar to the right side of your desktop.
3. Run Resize Enable

To farther clarify this - press "down" key repeatedly while task group selection box is selected (highlighted).

What do the "grade bonus" and "TF Training" numbers actually mean?  I infer that they are bonuses of some kind, but bonuses to what?

Combat mainly. Task force training only has an effect if you've selected the 'inexperienced fleet penalties' option in at the start of the game (which I don't recommend, since it's just annoying). If it's less than 100%, there will be a delay between the time you issue orders to a Task Group and when they start carrying them out if there are hostiles in the same system. Crew grade is based on your racial training level and is gained through combat. It's applied to weapon accuracy and maybe some other things.

Okay, take two at me trying to get into this.

What is the command to get MSSTDFMT.dll working? The image in the OP is broken.

Also, some of the windows are too big for my screen and get cut off at the bottom regardless of how I position them. I don't suppose there's a way to resize them, is there?

I'm not sure the exact problem you're having, but i seem to have a copy of msstdfmt.dll in my Aurora folder and in every subfolder, if you don't have it in any of them that may be the problem, i found a downlaod link here; http://www.dlldll.com/msstdfmt.dll_download.html
EDIT, here's what the spoiler said:

Quote
IT WORKS!

Here's the fix for anyone with 64 bit win7 and probably vista, since this isn't documented anywhere specifically on their forums I'm going to post it here :P

If you're getting the MSSTDFMT.dll file is missing when you press F9 for necessary star system information:
1. Download the dll here http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msstdfmt
2. Drop the .dll in C:/windows/syswow64
3. Open up the command line as administrator and type the second to last line outlined in red

It will now work upon restarting the game.
If what i said doesn't work, try that.

That seems... unnecessary, but I'll try it. I've already tried it with the dll in the main Aurora folder and that didn't work.

Yes, that's what I've been following. The problem is, the information I need is in the image under #3, which is not loading.

Okay, I figured that was it but I got an error message the first time I tried. After some googling it turns out I just had to run the command prompt as administrator. Thanks.

Now I can open the system info screen. Too bad it is still far too large for my screen.

Yeah anything under 1366x768 is a problem, But i was playing it on 1280x600 and only had problems on a few screens. resize enable helped but it was a little buggy.

I tried it but it screwed up the entry boxes whenever I changed the vertical size. I got GiMeSpace and it seems to be pretty well suited for the job, if a bit annoying at times.

On to actually learning the game. Wish me luck!

Edit: Actually, screw GiMeSpace. It is absolutely awful if you don't buy it, and I don't intend to pay $20 for that piece of crap utility.

There's a "use reduced height windows" option somewhere. Unfortunately I don't use it so I couldn't tell you where.
