I enjoyed GalCivII until I realized a little exploit.  Build a scout, maybe a few.  Send them deep into space.  Design a ship that packs on tons and tons and tons of armor and one powerful weapon.  Convert the scouts into this ship type.

I'd end up with god-ships that could take any hit without losing HP and just peck at the enemy over time.  It can especially exploit miniaturization, and even moreso if you know what your enemy is sporting and just pack that armor.

Heheh, I usually ended up building what were essentially mobile starbases that were excruciatingly slow, but could wipe out entire fleets alone. I guess I was compensating for not being able to (easily, efficiently) do that in Aurora.

I've done that in Aurora as well.  Get a single shipyard big enough and you can produce ships with massive shields and point defense - I find shields regen better than armor alone.  It takes a long time to tool a shipyard and to produce them, but if you can manage it then that ship will soak infinite damage and blast lasers back at the enemy.

True, but you actually have to have the resources to create and support a vessel in the dozens of millions of tons, not just however much time you need to build it.

Funnily enough, I can do that almost every game. I turn Earth into the center of my entire empire, with all other systems being stripped of all resources, then the habitable planets being turned into cash cows. 100 or so shipyards, couple of billion of people from taking them from the cash worlds. Sorta takes a long time to respond to threats outside a certain range, but it's more effective this way.

Oh, well it helps that I ALWAYS support my fleets with a "Borehole" model PDC.  It's essentially one MASSIVE hangar sporting layers and layers of armor.  And to give you an idea of what "massive" means, I built the first version to house a Hive Queen.  Except then I realized that those have like 90,000% failure rate, so I decided it was better if there were a carrier that could fit the queen.  So my borehole station is big enough to fit a carrier, that can fit a queen.

Needless to say, I usually convert Mars and sometimes Venus into industrial sections.  Their main purpose is to construct more factories and ship them to Earth, who's entire construction team is busy on the borehole.  So I'm usually using a mass driver to send Earth resources to Mars, and then cargo ships will pull factories from Mars back to Earth.  When the borehole is finished, I never have to worry about any ship upkeep ever again, they're all put neatly into hangar space!

How to run Aurora in a playable state on small monitors:
1. Game Parameters -> Reduced Height Windows.
2. Lock taskbar to the right side of your desktop.
3. Download and run ResizeEnable

Well, I'm nowpretty much full-out sprinting with my industry and shipyards after I realised the starting resources weren't going to last anywhere near how long it would take to get some decent ships off the ground. Most of the missing materials are needed for mines and labs, but still. It's not even been 30 years D:

Geology teams are your friend, just shove em onto some of the largish (3000km diameter or larger) planets/moons and wait for them to find something, even if you don't micromanage them/savescum you should find enough in sol to keep you going for a few decades more.
I always leave mars/venus/earth/titan for last as i can actually colonise them and use my leftover ground based mines.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Yeah, you train your geo team up on the larger gas giant moons, then drop them on the inner planets for massive resource boosts.

I was talking about just Earth. I've basically just sat here researching better engines and building stuff, and only just noticed half of my resources had run out. None of the ones necessary for shipbuilding thankfully, but still. I can't build any more labs or anything.

Thing is, if you send out a geo team when you finish your survey of the system next time, they'll be up to a good level of skill by the time you start running low, which with a spot of luck can get you more of something scarce. In any case, expandind mining ops is normal at that stage.

I think the problem isn't the lack of offworld minerals, but the lack of offworld mining.  If you ignore it, or focus on constructing a crappy war fleet/PDC defense force, then it can be brutal to set up.  At the very least, you need a geoship and a cargo ship, along with a surplus of automated mines.  Mining ships are nice, but you still need cargo ships to move the minerals back to Earth.

I'd suggest subsidizing your civilian shipping companies.  They can help with moving the minerals.  Also, build a few mass drivers, so your cargo ships can focus on moving automines around instead of minerals.

The good thing about Sol is that it has A TON of asteroids, so there is a lot of mineral wealth in-system.  With two asteroid fields, nine planets, and many moons, Sol is generally one of the best systems in the game.  I've rarely seen generated systems that are better than Sol.
