Last I checked they only fired 4. Then again I haven't updated in awhile.

He probably mixed them up with railguns, which always fire five projectiles.
That's Advanced Railguns, which have to be discovered from ruins or advanced special enemies (Invaders?) first.

Last I checked they only fired 4. Then again I haven't updated in awhile.
You're right, don't worry.

Why would you use anything other than gauss cannons for point defense? Late stage missiles are going to be fairly weak, and gauss cannons shoot five times a second each.
Because gauss cannons only give you a single chance to intercept, right when they hit your ships. AMMs get a lot more chances to intercept, so if the first try fails you can shoot more missiles. Until you run out of ammo. And you can use the missles against other things, such as beam ships, which you can't do with gauss cannons unless you want to get ridiculously close to the enemy ships.

There's supposedly a third, "middle option" for missile defense, where you detach small escort ships ahead of your main fleet armed with laser turrets to fire at incoming missiles. It needs to be used in combination with at least final defensive fire, and requires a certain tech level to be effective, and while I haven't ever really played around with it enough to make it work, maybe someone with more experience with that tactic can comment on its effectiveness.

And yeah, I was wrong about the railguns. I never use the things, so I guess I shouldn't talk about them.

I've never used anything but gauss for serious PD. Either I'm wiping enemy ships from beyond their range with missiles and fighters, or I've got heavy enough PD escorts for my fleet to soak up hundreds of missiles. A pair of ships with 20 or so single TL3-4 gauss turrets linked into 4 or 5 turret fire groups is usually enough to deal with any missile threat.

One thing to note though, is, IIRC, lasers are by far the most effective PD against Plasma Torpedos. Also, another thing to keep in mind is that if you're going to use laser PD escorts, they'll need to have a large enough engagement envelope to have time to target enemy missiles as they pass.

Hey people, game looks awesome. Quick question: is the AI in Aurora any good, or do you have to provide your own enjoyment?

Bit of both. More of one or the other depending on how skilled you are and how strong the AI is compared to you.

The current tutorials including video tutorial are here. Otherwise pretty much everything has been covered at some point in this thread, or experiment and ask questions here or on the Aurora acadamy board.

You can also have long-range laser PD on your ships. Of course, they need to be quite long-ranged if ennemy missiles are to be shot more than once.

Of course you can set up an onion missile defense with many layers using the protect threat axis orders to spread out escorts away from the main taskforce.

For example this is the general plan that most of my larger taskgroups fall into by mid-game tech levels.
  • Outer ring, 1000 ton box-launcher Anti-Missile Escorts, 5 million kms out at 600 intervals - only targets salvoes outside the outer ring.
  • Central ring, 2000 ton - 5000 ton Laser PD Frigates, at max range of current laser tech at 600 intervals staggered 300 from outer ring.
  • Inner ring, 2000 ton - 5000 ton Meson PD Frigates, at max range of current meson tech at 600 intervals.
  • Taskgroup, 2000 ton - 5000 ton Gauss PD Frigates set on final defensive fire. 1000 ton box-launcher Anti-Missile Escorts - only targets salvoes inside the outer ring.

With a carrier + colliers for reloading the missile escorts accompanying the task group. A dedicated sensor ship with the taskforce means that the laser and meson frigates don't need to turn on their own active sensors and combined with some stealth tech may well be able to go unnoticed and as such untargeted by the enemy.

I'm getting an obnoxious error every time I click 30-5 day, and every time I get to 5 days clicking 1 day or less. It's Error 11, something about dividing by zero, what do I do to fix this?

We need more information. Obviously dividing by zero means something is nonexistent when it should exist, but we cannot tell where with the information you provided. Can you type down the entire error message?
