I have to say, this has been my greatest fear for a very long time.  That these terrorists are not the moronic self-parodies they appear to be, but are in fact extremely subtle geniuses.  Think about it.  With little more than some det cord, box cutters and easily persuaded young invincibles, al-Qaida accomplished the 2006 Military Commissions Act, got George Bush reelected, trapped America in two endless bankrupting wars, made airline travel an expensive nightmare of imbecility, and have put every American who gives two shits about politics at each other's throats, even the ones who agree with each other.  If you really did want to destroy the United States, you couldn't do a much better job.  Even nuclear saturation would give you something to rally around.

Remember folks, always say you meant to do that, especially the screw ups that work out in your favor.

Managed to get 90% of the arabic world to hate their organization and in the end, don't have the funds and technology to actually carry out further attacks that would cause actual fear, and have re-involved the US in world issues in a way that basically fucks over everyone in third world countries. Oh and did I mention they've begun a process which would allow presidents to reinstate a military-industrial complex which effectively makes America's army godly? Uh, as far as I know, most Arab countries aren't exactly up in arms about shoving out Al-Quaeda, and are too pre-occupied to do much about them. Pakistan didn't move until Al-Quaeda would've taken their capital, and there's a dozen other countries for them to hide in. Plus, AQ isn't exactly going to run out backers. There's always rich Saudis and Iran to back them.

Right, because that's useful against insurgents or an army of conscripted Chinese troops. We've figured out how to win the last war(Cold War) just in time for the next paradigm shift in conflict.

Eventually, the only way to make war on the US will be via EMP. And once the US military has electromagnetic shielding and the proposed electronic force-fields (designed to stop lazers and other energy weapons, not projectiles) even that will be pointless.

The idea of any organization having that much immutable power is a bit disturbing. If someone with that kind of power were to decide to create an authoritarian state, there would literally be nothing anyone could ever do to bring them down. We're only human, after all.
