The butterfly effect.Small change, big effect.
« on: January 09, 2010, 04:15:47 pm »

Hi all.

I thought I'd start a thread for examples of small changes people have made to the raws that they've found make a big difference.

Now I play with the dig deeper mod now days because I find it doesn't damage the feel of the game just for background.

After watching the film Up I kinda liked the idea of the dogs in that so I was experimenting with adding tags to the dogs.
CAN_SPEAK and INTELLIGENT seemed to do nothing for the way the dogs behaved or interacted with my dwarfs but  [CAN_LEARN] had a remarkable effect on gameplay.
After throwing all the dogs in a pit for a year or so they were all insanely tough and blinking with legendary social skills.
Now whenever an orc siege arrives I don't even try to take them on with a dwarves, I throw 2 or 3 of the dogs over the wall and watch as they tear the entire siege limb from limb.

first:
Can anyone suggest tags to add to my dogs to get interesting behavior out of them.

Second:
What small changes have you tried, ie adding or removing a single tag from a single creature or some such which has lead to big changes in how you play the game.
(setting the size/damblock of some enemy to 1000000 doesn't count)

I'm sure that was added to elves to make them even more hypocritical.

Intelligent implies the three can civ, can speak, and can learn tags, but can civ will only take effect if there's an entity to go along with it.

Damblock/size affects wars and play a ton.

I like adding 0s to the end of creature raw gen rates so walking along in adventure mode I'm tripping over creatures all the time without fast travel.

Add it to dwarves. Now they will set each other on fire when they spot a mouse.

There was a thread about adding certain tags to dwarves, so that you can bring spares with you at embark

If you want to seriously experience chaos theory in DF, make a second copy of any random creature raw entry.  Like two [CREATURE:DOG] entries.

That'll really show you some changes right there, usually for massive hilarity.  Like herrings leading an army against earthworms or something.  It's not very playable though, unfortunately, but the Legends section becomes a goldmine.

I still need to experiment with duplicated entries.  My sole experience was accidentally duplicating longswords while trying to give elves swords which do gore damage rather than slashing (because really, wood is more splintery than cutty).  Instead of anything exciting happening, the game would crash to the desktop whenever a caravan with longsword-weilding guards entered the map. :(

I think the super-funky stuff only happens with creature entries.  To which, you can probably make a creature that basically never spawns, and then duplicate it, which might fix the crashing somehow.  Maybe.

Wellllll... Aside from adding the [SPEED:0] tag to dwarfs.

Removing eyes adds up to some interesting happenings. Also allows for building over a chasm without being interrupted by creatures.

I think I accidentally added the dragonfire tag to humans. I loved hearing them talk about how so and so got burned up in so and so's fire. Oh, and when I visited a human town for some massacring, the utter inferno that followed it.
