I've talked to Armok before. Many of us on the IRC channel have.

He's impossible.

I feel bad for the guy, and some of us have tried to help him, but at some point it gets harder and harder to care.

According to what he sais, it was somehow related to pedophilia, dunno what exactly happened, but meh, I don't care

He told me that it wasn't about that, that he's "not a sexual being", and that he didn't actually remember what he posted but that it COULDN'T have deserved a mute because he NEVER says immature things. This is what he told me.

Anyway, on IRC, we started talking about his problems and his behavior, yet he wound up lagging almost a half-hour behind the conversation; it was like speaking to someone in the past. He would respond to things from 20-30 minutes ago, in realtime but with a lot of latency (i.e. without providing context, as if, in his world, they had just been said), and refused to scroll down the chat because it was SO IMPORTANT that he respond to EVERYTHING, somehow; it was a huge mess.

Then he tried getting us to speak for him on the forum. I don't mean "hey guys, tell them I'm sorry". I mean telling us to say the things that HE WOULD NORMALLY SAY.

For example, he told me to go to this one post and post that it doesn't belong in General Discussion and should be over in The New VN or whatever the kids are calling it these days.

We told him that it wasn't his job to moderate the forum in the first place, and that telling us to be his mouthpiece goes against the entire point of his being muted. We made fun of him a bit for this, and he called us "evil" and asked if we "had any compassion".

Again, I feel bad for the guy, but he has very serious problems and has even more trouble knowing that they are problems or how to fix them. He said he's in therapy, which is a start, but his attitude towards it is god-awful.

He expects people to cater to his desires far more than is healthy, and obviously has trouble with interpersonal relationships.

One conundrum is: When someone has no meaningful social interaction, they'll cling to whatever they can get to an extremely unhealthy degree, like how he treats this forum. Unfortunately, doing this drives him away from people (or vice-versa, really), preventing him from making progress in the first place.

It's really sad that he can't stand being muted for three days without basically flipping out and not knowing what to do with himself. It must make it even harder for the people moderating this forum to know what to do with him, since on one hand, awful behavior shouldn't be encouraged, but on the other hand, he talks about this forum as if it's the only thing keeping him alive.

Yeah, Armok has some serious problems. He thinks we're his family or something, despite the fact that most of us would probably only feel sad for a minute if he killed himself and the rest wouldn't care at all.

I find it rather confusing and disheartening for anybody to "not care at all" when someone they even just-sort-of-know commits suicide, but I guess basic empathy is too much to expect from people sometimes.

But yeah, hasn't Armok stated before that he'd die and/or kill (I forget whether it was one, the other, or both) for Toady?

I have serious doubts about both his supposed "condition" and whether he's getting any "therapy" for it.  A little while ago, he turned to me for some private advice.  I'm too goddamned polite to break the unofficial confidentiality and post it (partly because I'm afraid it might drive him over the edge, not that the raw honesty of this thread wouldn't anyway).  I wasn't willing to pussyfoot around with him though, and suffice to say he stopped asking me for validation pretty quick.

I don't know what's wrong with the guy, but I know two things about it.  One is that whatever it is, the reason it's a problem still and growing is that he doesn't want to fix it and is never going to try.  The other is that he's making it damn hard to care.  I want to, but only so much egomania I can tolerate.

IIRC, he has sworn that should he be permanently banned, he will use alts for a porn spamming vendetta.

Aqizzar: I'm not sure how you can both doubt his "condition" and speak as if you know he has serious problems at the same time, but yes, it's really hard to feel like he's being genuine when he says he's getting help (or needs to).

Also, I think he spelled it "teraphy". Maybe this is some sort of new, different treatment!

Maybe he was lying about therapy and maybe he wasn't, but even if he wasn't, his attitude towards it is terrible.

Really, I just think all this is attention/empathy trolling. He feels like this is the only place where people "understand" him, so when people here don't pay much attention to him, he prolly starts this attention-getting madness as a way to feel appreciated. I sincerely doubt this is his only venue for social interaction, but it is the only venue where he feels confident enough to express himself.

Basically, by refusing to calm down, he's turning into an emotional leech. He should really get out some, interact with more people, gain some confidence, and things will be OK. If he needs/is in therapy, fine. But, really, I'm not worried--it just sounds like the teenager angst that most everyone goes through.

funny thing that, despite claiming that this forum is all interaction he gets, he only posts like once or twice a day usualy

one would think that he doesn't spend more than 20 active minutes on here, and spends the rest of time pressing F5 and hoping something interesting pops up

edit: also never compare my glorious name to his arm_ok tag

I sincerely doubt this is his only venue for social interaction, but it is the only venue where he feels confident enough to express himself.

I honestly think it IS his only venue.

When he went on the IRC, stuff like this happened:

Quote
[07/01/10 08:29:06] <Dain> Armok: Try IRC.
[07/01/10 08:29:30] <Armok> what do you think I'm doing right now?
[07/01/10 08:30:12] <Armok> But it's not the same thing, I want to talk to my friends, not just random peaple. this thing is just abaut one step from omegle
[07/01/10 08:30:31] <smeding> Armok, so uh, get to know people on here?
[07/01/10 08:30:36] <smeding> they could be your new friends!
[07/01/10 08:31:03] <Armok> look, I've trid evrything. DF forums is the only place I have succseded

(extraneous lines trimmed)

He's said stuff like this a lot, about how none of his other attempts at human interaction have ever succeeded. I'm not sure what he thinks makes this place so special, but there you have it.

Of course, you also had namad6 telling him to make an alt account (using a proxy, in case of an "IP trace", to use rather CSI:Miami-like terms) and calling the other people "retarded" for instead suggesting he just not rely on the forums so much, if you care about the ADDITIONAL BONUS DRAMA.

I dont know too much about Armok but I think he is bluffing.

With the threats and such? Probably, but his problems? Not so much. Although the way he describes them are often a little off-kilter, of course.
