I think it's just them starting a thread about you and making fun of you a whole lot, including digging up whatever personal dirt on you they can.

Yeah, I'm pretty much going to ignore anything you ever say from here on out.

DF made it to Forumwarz*, too--or, at least, someone filling in the databases for the mad-libs style content generation was a fan.  In the midst of a heated battle on a conspiracy forum, this little gem popped up:

Quote from: A randomly generated NPC
Seriously, my inbred cousin’s creepy aunt’s grandma is an USDA agent and he said that the next Dwarf Fortress wille be a test to see how people wiull react to the Martian invasion. It will include a wizard’s staff modeled identically to the one used by the Quartermaster Corps Irregulars and the “leprechaun” enemy will be based on the Martian spawns and there will be a levle based on their Ahmadabad spaceport

Except for the fact that Dwarf Fortress has no levels, this is almost plausible...

* So, a deliberate parody of internet trolling, instead of a spiraling descent into probably inadvertent self-parody.

I know this is unrelated (somewhat)

But who in the world is that extra woman in the poster? I've never seen her in snow white.

Wait is that supposed to be the Prince?
I think that might be one of the faeries that help her.

Um, I'm a fraid to ask, but what exactly does "getting HD'd entail?  Does it go beyond the defamation of an anonymous avatar, and affect your RL reputation or that of other avatars?
Sometimes, if they're lucky, it does. And to both.

I would have to say, the only other way I can find to get out of it, if it has a chance of going that far, is to stand up to the attack, and find a way to convince them that it was a Xanatos Gambit (or Roulette if you want it to appear accidental and unexpected; though wanted nonetheless) you pulled on them out of boredom; and that you're much smarter than all of the attackers, and call out all of their attacks (while supposedly joking along, and being in on some of the jokes and taking on the hits with pride), force an interview if you must as well (psyching them out whether they believe you or not about your personality) humiliating them in the process (by already rendering all attacks worthless since you admit to mostly flaws, and minimize the amount of jokes they launch at you. Forcing them to recycle old jokes to just plain sad/lame levels. Even to the point that even the victim is getting bored of the same attack. Essentially, it's like a fighting game, and making your opponent button mash one button like mad as the only way to win. A cheap and boring method.), and appearing as if the attack had no effect on you, and you were acting pathetic just to see how many trolls you can wrangle.

If you can convince them to doubt that you were pathetic the entire time, and are indeed a seriously complicated and fucked up person/troll; then you have won. All you have to do is admit the fact: you are a much better troll than them, and you were the 'victim' (which in truth, you actually were). If the thread dies within the next half hour, then the success is more certain. If it gets locked by the next day, it worked. Kudos is given if other members (especially those involved in the attack) are convinced that the whole attack is no longer funny, and begin to fight amongst themselves while you walk away from the furball with barely a scratch on you. You can also be the bigger person and just walk out as they continue to brutalize, showing you are indeed the bigger person, and don't give a fuck what they think. They change your avatar and such later; you can just continue acting nonchalantly, and bother them with it. Nothing bugs a bully more than their victim being bored with their "pitiful" attempts to get their attention.

In a sense, what was once a pathetic person, so to speak, is actually one very dangerous person to come across. A troll that outclasses an entire forum made of trolls; out of boredom (As the illusion should show: this is an activity done with their free time. They do this regularly. They're A-class at least.). A cookie jar to those who pull it off as a successful bluff. A can of worms instead if it fails.

It sort of reminds me of a quote from "The Chronicles of Riddick":
"In normal times, evil would be fought by good. But in times like these, well, it should be fought by another kind of evil."

NOTE:
If you have any family or important people you don't want to take notice of the attack, I suggest you act fast. But sometimes, letting them attack for a good while first is also a good move. It would look as though you've been reading their actions, letting them build a sort of confidence; not expecting any response. And then *WHAM*, victim responds with a confident demeanor, and clearstheir name the only other way they know how. By out-performing his attackers. The classic backlash.

Oh yeah, and to further convince them that it was all a trap, take your time leaving and eliminating all related accounts and IDs (for example: wait a month, and eliminate all related accounts within the same day after the time has passed. Remember to not respond at all for a short while. You know, in case of any PMs regarding apologies, or BS callouts.). Make them think that it was all indeed a really complex trap setup. Just an added bit of spice to make them more paranoid. It's like those movie scenes where the villain or anti-hero walks away from a car or building in slo-mo, and the building/car explodes moments later, and the person doesn't even flinch. Have that kind of cool, and remain incognito, and watch the paranoia, and the confidence of the attackers unravel. Oh, and it's best advised you change IP address ASAP too to further guarantee the skillful backlash.

Let me give a more detailed description. Ugly, indignant, bitter, dogmatically feminist, reflexively jealous, vengeful humor haters. Trust me, if you experienced them firsthand, you'd agree. Being unattractive doesn't make you a bad person, building your identity around your self-loathing and trying to make everyone else feel as miserable as you do does.

In this life you can either stand up to people like that and suffer the consequences or you can take it like a bitch, I like to think of myself as belonging the former category.

a lot of outsider assumptions

You don't really know what you're talking about.   Rolling with the punches never works.

Edit:  Just pointing out that there's complaints in this thread that SA has become too nice, and also that it's too mean.

Dude, the Something Awful forums looove Dwarf Fortress.

I think its the only thing that they haven't been able to say anything bad about.

And I think they only started playing it to harp on how utterly terrible it was only to find that it was a crowning moment of awesome.

I would probably still log in to SA from time for the odd DF LP or specialty topic except I lost my password due to the insane security requirements they imposed a while back, which were never even relaxed despite assurances at the time that they would be temporary.

no matter tho all the cool kids moved onto the filesharing darknet sites long ago

It's sorta like martial arts. Sometimes you want a shot to come across you so you can use the momentum to your advantage, hoisting your opponent by their own petard with minimal effort. You know, wait for them to make a mistake, and exploit it.

I guess I'll just stop here with my responses on the topic.

If these 'couple' of women were so bad that they caused the end of SA's golden age all by themselves, how did they not get removed from their posts?

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

SA used to be funny before about 2004 when Lowtax made a couple of ugly and indignant women admins and the transgressive humor it was famous for started being labeled trolling, sexism, racism, heteronormativity, etc. SASS was a legitimate and hilarious reaction to this but TNE and SMYD emerged at a time when most former goons realised that it was too late to bring back SA's glory days so they're not as popular or funny. As for the "benefits" of being a member, you could pay $20 for a premium account and you still won't have a search function thanks to their moronic web developer who somehow survives thanks to Lowtax's nepotism, give the money to Toady instead.
Sounding kind of butthurt there, bro. I certainly agree with the last bit, though.

Anything where people have identities becomes a hugbox to some extent. Part of the nature of humanity, I guess.
This may actually be a good thing
Sure. It all depends on your point of view.

I have a feeling that this thread includes both people who have been there and like that sort of thing, and people who find it displeasing.

Because they banned anyone who hurt their extremely fragile feelings, this increased short-term revenue because every time someone resubscribed following a ban they had to pay $10.

It wasn't just them though, they were merely part of a colourful cast of moderators and admins who included an extremely promiscuous Dutch teenage gay communist who banned anyone who questioned his insane worldview and a "babyfur" (pedophillic furry) artist.

The meme when I was around  used to be "hope you got 5 bux" - when did it go up to $10?
