MyLittlePonyBuiltMyHotRod, this is your first warning. I would like to direct you to read our forum's FAQ and posting guidelines before posting again. Specifically we don't use swear words here, and your picture of Stalin riding a Year3 Limited Edition Starflower inside a German concentration camp was both upsetting and historically inaccurate.

When they stop converting everything to blotchy jpegs, I'll care.
Use PNG, use Tinypic :). It's easy.

Wait what? ???

There's even a forum nowadays making fun of how crazy, unfunny and bland SA has become;

http://www.theneweffort.com/forums/index.php

It's become a real hugbox nowadays, I can't even fathom how someone could find it offensive.
Anything where people have identities becomes a hugbox to some extent. Part of the nature of humanity, I guess.

Honestly, that doesn't even matter. He can use whatever format he likes; none of the popular imagehosting websites will mess with it unless he has them do something stupid like resize it.

The pont is that JPG uses weird compression which makes color transition areas wrong and BMP is just big. PNG is the best format by my standarts, and honestly, that DOES matter.

And SA is without a doubt the best moderated, organized, and content-filled of the larger forums out there.  Not to mention all the perks of being a member.

I like straightdope's forums; better behaved than SA and all that.

SA used to be funny before about 2004 when Lowtax made a couple of ugly and indignant women admins and the transgressive humor it was famous for started being labeled trolling, sexism, racism, heteronormativity, etc. SASS was a legitimate and hilarious reaction to this but TNE and SMYD emerged at a time when most former goons realised that it was too late to bring back SA's glory days so they're not as popular or funny. As for the "benefits" of being a member, you could pay $20 for a premium account and you still won't have a search function thanks to their moronic web developer who somehow survives thanks to Lowtax's nepotism, give the money to Toady instead.

On the other hand, Something Awful has the best damned DF succesion games (LPs, if you will) on the internet.

Seriously, if you haven't read Syrupleaf, you're missing a lot.

EDIT: I'm actually a SA member who registered just because of the DF LPs, and don't frequent any other part of the forums than LPs for the reasons stated - general rudeness, etc.

I was the same way. The LPs were what attracted me to be a member. But I walked outside my 'designated zone' and got into a couple arguments I best should've stayed out of. That's when I also learned of Helldump. I was actually threatened to be HD'd a few times for just merely participating in a thread or something (it's been so long, I forget). After investigating HD after that. I got the hell outta there. I even requested a perma-ban for added safety (considering the option to buy yourself a hacking of someone's account avatar (for another 10 bucks)). Oh my goodness, the crap they can put you through with that.

I think the board (most of the members, at least) seriously frowned upon those who join exclusively for LPs. It seems they were a favorite target.

If you somehow feel the need to remark on whether or not the admins were sexually attractive, I'm not sure I trust your opinions on whether or not their complaints were legitimate.

Itnetlolor: I can honestly understand them frowning on people who are there just to follow Let's Plays. In a similar vein, it bugs me when scads of people show up here just to do whatever silly forum game stuff and don't otherwise interact with anything. Your mileage may vary, though.

If you really think about it, that's just kind of silly.  What are they doing to hurt you?

When the forum in question doesn't even have free membership, it's even more silly because the guys essentially paid more money for less use, meaning the forum is getting more income.

Normally, nothing, but private places on the Internet tend to have a given purpose. If I run a messageboard built around a specific place/concept/person, and a subgroup of users completely separate from the rest show up, have their own forum subculture, and never meaningfully interact with the rest of the forum, then why are they there as opposed to somewhere else? It's weird and incongruous for that to happen, although I guess this effect is worse on a small forum, as with a very large one you can expect more distinct subgroups to form to begin with.

The point of a paid membership isn't just for income or to keep the site running. It's also a measure of quality control, and to make sure you get the kind of people you want.

I know this is unrelated (somewhat)

But who in the world is that extra woman in the poster? I've never seen her in snow white.

Wait is that supposed to be the Prince?

Um, I'm a fraid to ask, but what exactly does "getting HD'd entail?  Does it go beyond the defamation of an anonymous avatar, and affect your RL reputation or that of other avatars?
