Dwarf deserters!
« on: January 08, 2010, 12:31:39 pm »

I think it would be "fun" if some dwarves (those with certain personality traits) deserted a fortress when things start to go really bad there.  Not only would they run off by themselves, they would take their family as well.  Also, they'd raid the supplies so they might have enough food to get to wherever they are running away to.  It would be "fun" to come across these guys in nearby human/dwarf settlements or whatever complaining about the disaster that was your colonization attempt.  ;D

Please no posts claiming this doesn't work because it's "not dwarfy".  I flatulate on your silly fantasy stereotypes derived from second-rate consumer items!   >:(

Actually, I've wondered why unhappy dwarves don't have the capacity to just up-and-leave your fortress if things are going badly for them. It would make sense if there was nowhere else to go (terrifying glaciers are not happy places, for example), but I imagine that a lot of new migrants would leave if they were sitting on a grassy knoll when all of a sudden fourteen dwarves get shanked by goblin ambushers.

What's not dwarfy about that?  Actually, I think it would also be Fun if dwarves with certain personality traits could also ignore forbidden status, much like moody dwarves do.  This food is forbidden?  Screw you, I'm hungry!

This could sort of tie in to justice. Laws against deserters, people who defy orders, that sort of thing. Right now the only crimes in Fort mode are "hitting someone" and "hitting someone until he dies", and I've never seen a non tantruming/insane dwarf commit a crime.

This sounds better and better.  Dwarves getting whipped hammered for insubordination, whipped hammered for robbing food supplies, whipped hammered for talking to other dwarves about running away... it will be like the dwarvish version of Papillon!

I like it. This has potential. It might be a nice change of pace from tantrum spirals: instead of everyone dying, everyone just leaves.

Rather, everyone tries to leave. For their sake, the Fortress Guard had better not be completely loyal to the fort. :D

They shouldn't automatically have the influence to make their perfectly happy family leave. We should be careful with this mechanic to avoid stupid behavior, otherwise you have dwarves migrating to a fort, whining that goblins raid it like every other fort in existence and then leave with your shit

It sounds like Efrafa, and anything that sounds like that must be good.  At that point, you'll have Fortress Guard, Royal Guard and the Owsla to keep people from trying to desert.

Actually, Watership Down may provide more inspirations for DF...  Imagine a "good-natured" Titan who gives your dwarves gifts and, in exchange, occasionally catches and eats one of them...

I could throw a noble or two to the Titan.  Sounds win-win to me ;D

Since the Titan is technically already us, you've probably done that multiple times. Except we don't, apparently, eat nobles, we just kill them in myriad horrible ways.

Maybe after the justice system gets some reworking we could start adding dwarf immorality, probably based on a dwarf's personality or even their ambush ability (if you're going to steal, at least do it sneak...ily).  The current system of killing random but often valuable dwarves because a noble made an impossible demand just plain hurts :/

I like the idea of the sneaky pickpocket dwarf becoming a legendary ambusher.  Then you can recruit him into the military a la a thousand goofy action movies:

"Look Urist McPickpocket, I think you're immoral scum and a legendary liar, but you're the only dwarf I know who could actually sneak past the goblin siege and assassinate the goblin warlord.  If you pull it off, we'll clear your record."

Extra points if the dwarf in question has a speech impediment and says, "goblins are a disease, and I'm the cure!"

We are, sadly, not in-game entities, though I'd be in favor of a game mode wherein the player is represented by an in-game entity and, upon that entity's death, the fortress becomes an AI-controlled part of the world (It'd be an interesting way of playing the game, especially if you purposefully chose very old dwarves, and wanted to see how much of a fortress you could put together before you keeled over).  I hate that I have to abandon a fortress, I'd like to be able to just "walk away" and visit one of my living fortresses in adventure mode.

The simplest way I can think would be to implement some rules that a fortress needs to be built with an accessible trade depot X number bedrooms, so much alcohol and foodstuffs, so many farming plot tiles and an active dwarven economy.  Then in adventure mode everyone there gets magic barrels.

Of course a fortress might only survive a few seasons if it had a weak military and a dangerous biome/enemy civs.

Back on topic: more unruly dwarves please!
