Actually yeah, as a mechanic that could be awesome. You'd need to keep frenzied notes, though, and find a reason to provide incentive to change old statements for both scum and town, or it'll be a definite tell. Maybe a role that forces a player to Edit an old post, replacing it with a reworded statement of their choosing... it'd be cooler if the Moderator could do the Editing, or if it could be done stealthily.

The biggest key, though, is what Org said: it wasn't an accident but a purposeful rulebreak out of anger.  If she just had enough of the game she could've just let herself be lynched (the day was about over) or, better, ask for a replacement.

I never "broke a rule out of anger". I edited to post a joke image I had forgotten to include, which I'd just made as a present for Webadict, in an effort to stop a huge outpouring of anger that had taken control of the entire thread. Any expressed irritation on my part was a result of the aftermath, and the explosion of "OMG EDITING" claims that happened afterward, since it was much ado about nothing.

The forum does indeed have an edit function for a reason, and a righteous judicial uproar over editing a post that was completely lacking in any game-related content whatsoever makes no sense in the spirit of the rule, nor the game. I daresay it's a serious case of Molehill-to-Mountain transformation. As for removing myself from the game, I did indeed do that, after seeing that some variety of powderkeg was heaped at my feet by several people. I thought it better to take the discussion out of the thread, out of respect to Org.

Most importantly, in the event that he missed the fruit of 15 Minutes of Spritework, spent just for him...

The edit function is really a byproduct of the fact that this is really meant to be a forum for discussing things like DF2 and that Mafia is sort of shoehorned in.  Mafiascum is more made for the game and in there you not only have no editing allowed but there's a way to filter a thread by player so you can focus on one person's posts easily. 

As for the game.. it's partially an issue with the game itself really.  One big method of scumhunting is emotional disruption.  It's based on the idea that everyone is trying to act 'cool' and 'collected, making them hard to read.  If you push them off-center, you cause them to slip up and show themselves.  My own posts, especially early on, use that to good effect (though it's caused many to scream at me for 'trying to lynch someone on no evidence').  Others, like Web, Zai, and Alex, REALLY get under your skin.  They aren't REALLY angry (I hope) but they seek to trip you up with that. 

That, combined with the general lack of humor Bay 12 doesn't have (myself included) well...leads to what we have here.

Sidenote: I do get pushy about the rules because of what happened in NSBM1 when just the HINT of a rulebreak nearly unhinged the game completely.  It didn't help that it was based on flavor text and thinking "That wouldn't be possible if I didn't spend several hours writing a story for this thing" didn't help my mood then.  Now, I do get pushy about rules.. at least during the game in session.

Mafiascum has a few other features, like mods who can edit the thread and post numbers.  Although they don't have the "post before you" warning.

I already said that I have no hard feelings toward you, Org, and I meant that. Internet grudges are the silliest kind. As Meph was just a bit ago, I was disucussing the "Rule" qualities of the editing rule, outside of the context of your game.

Sometimes you make a formating mistake. In fact, I just attempted to quote, and botched it terribly, and needed to edit it. I would think it better to Edit for clarity such that the original intention is communicated, rather than refraining from it and cluttering with a subsequent double-post that revises the first.

They are timestamped, after all. If the edit occurs 1 minute after the original post, far before any new posts have been made, and probably before it's even been viewed, What praytell is being covered up?

Forum drama is also significantly more silly than regular drama. And that's silly as it is.

There's a 2 minute grace period before it puts the timestamp. I edit my posts all the time before then to correct typos or add something quickly. You can get away with the edit if you do it in that period of time.

After, however, is a different story. In this post, we see an edit. Only 4 minutes after originally posted, just 2 minutes past the timestamp's start. A pretty major thing, when you consider the original post was game-ending. In your post here, you edited about 22 minutes after your original post, 20 minutes after the timestamp's start. There is no way for us to know what you could have removed or changed in that time.

It would help if the forum kept a record of the original posts, perhaps linked to by the _{« Last Edit: Date, Time by Name»} bit.
