I'm about halfway through... pretty sad. Amazing how the few can so thoroughly control the many. I'm sure lots of governments are like that just not in so obvious a way.

I agree, just that some are more screwed up on how to treat the country's problems than others.
Like America, and other nations and using celebrities and popular stations and performers as pawns for mass control over the nation.

If you think this is in any way comparable to what goes on in a country like North Korea, I suggest you move there and gain some perspective.

I've read stories of people visiting North Korea (which is quite difficult). North Korea is basically the closest thing we have to a "Bad Future" style dystopia. It's terrible and rather surreal.

Lol North Korea.

[joke]I guess they are not that bad after all![/joke]

On a slightly more serious note. I have a friend who spent 6 years in US Army Intelligence as a linguist specializing in Asian languages. Part of his job was to monitor radio traffic coming out of NK.

One of the conversations he heard was a young man and young woman talking to each other about both of their families had either been executed or starved to death: parents, siblings, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins. All of them. They decided that since they had so much in common, they should hook up and have some "fun".

Another is that the Korean word for "frog" is similar to the word for "dive". They were trying to locate NK submarines but kept getting false alarms because of a popular NK drinking song where the chorus was "froggy froggy froggy dance".

Seriously? This stuff is news to someone?

I expect some things from the folks that frequent our forum here, but I assumed the fact that this stuff was going on was common knowledge.

For those who may not yet know it, Kim Jong-Il is a murderous, psychotic despot along the same vein has Hitler, Stalin, Hussein, and Achmadenijad.

Sigh. :(

Looking at the comments is even worse than the video.
Yeah.  It would seem obvious that the Hypocrisy guy is a troll, but they just keep feeding it . . .

Plus that comment on people not believing in evolution.  I don't know many people that think the first woman was literally made from the rib of a man.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

No, I knew the conditions in N. Korea were horrible. But I'd personally say that documentary is more horrifying to me than anything the nazis did... yes, genocide is awful, but being able to completely isolate a population and convince them of an alternate reality seems worse to me than anything Hitler (or even Stalin) ever dreamed of. And Kim Jong is just the successor... the real villain is his father, who somehow managed to propagate this insanity from beyond the grave. Can you imagine literally convincing your most loyal followers, who know it's all a big lie: 'Look, guys, I want you to keep this up after I'm dead and pretend I'm immortal. It'd be awesome, hundreds of thousands starving and worshiping my dead body and not knowing anything about any other kind of life.' It makes you wonder what the hell could possibly convince the people in his inner circle to follow through with that terrible stupidity. I'd say Kim Il-Sung might not have directly ordered the deaths of as many people as other nefarious leaders in the past, but the legacy he set up is far more evil in terms of human pain and suffering that resulted.

The scenes of people being momentarily reunited were awful, too. Can you imagine that happening, knowing that your loved one has to go back to that insane hellhole and probably end up dead as a result?

As a quick note, even making a comparison between N.K. and the United States is a joke. All people everywhere should always be on the lookout for government corruption, but the fact that we can criticize our own government openly should be a pretty good indicator that we're riding the gravy train in terms of levels of freedom worldwide.

You think that Hitler, Stalin, etc didn't delude their followers with propaganda, misinformation and denial of alternative information channels? They did, and Stalin got away with it for just as long.

Yes, but certainly not to this degree. Giant empty cities constructed solely for the purpose of pretending that normality exists for foreigners, brainwashing children to the extent that they literally believe in fairytales involving a superhuman national leader with magical powers, never allowing anyone to see a single foreign soul - sorry, but neither Hitler or Stalin ever pulled off that sort of Orwellian weirdness. I'm not saying they weren't terrible in different ways, but for me, this takes the cake in terms of screwed-upedness.

Not all North Koreans are brainwashed and crazy. I think that the elites have more information about the outside world, and defect because they know that the propaganda about the outside world is all lies. In Canada, there was a documentary on tv awhile back, about this family that escaped from North Korea and recorded the whole thing on their video phone. The family was obviously well-to-do, to be able to afford a video phone and the father worked for the government.

Itnetolor.

In many countries, there is thing called freedom of worship. While you can bag on religions all you want, people can believe in whatever they like, no matter how ridiculous it is.

Because free religion>forced religion.

It's right in the OP, but here it is again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ6E3cShcVU

The name is 'Welcome to North Korea' by Peter Tetteroo and Raymond Feddema.
