-BIG IMAGES- Using L3DT to render a DF world
« on: January 06, 2010, 11:00:44 pm »

I'm currently working up a tutorial on how to render the exported detail map from legends mode in L3DT (Large 3d Terrain), the standard edition of which is free.

So far all that's up is my first attempt on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2UXg-mKjfo
The Oracular Planet is a medium sized world I'm using for testing purposes.  I love the huge spire jutting out of the mountains there at the end.
Here is the -el- exported detail map.

I still need to get all the parameters tweaked to make it look better before I finish writing it all up.  Just wanted to share.

As a bonus here is the same map in FWE with some erosion and an abundance of rivers.

FWE assumes the map wraps so erosion and such produces weird artifacts at the edges because they don't line up.  Most noticable at the top and right of the map.

Bonus 2 is the above as the beginnings of a campaign map from Fractal Mapper.

I edited the OP for clarity.  It's definately DF related, unless you meant wrong forum.  General Discussion seemed the best fit.

Awesome. Definitely tagging this to do this myself later

Edit: Awesome video - looks a lot more realistic and interesting than other programs that do this. Hmm. Can't wait for the full tutorial

Yea, I didn't know whether you were talking about DF or not and this forum section is fine.

Very nice.  Just a matter of time before I can export my fort as a Crysis map.

Don't forget Mayday's (Nist Akath Cptn Mayday, not the tileset Mike Mayday) tutorial on Terragens 1 & 2.

This just confirms my suspicions that df has waaaay too many rivers as it is.

Pretty sure the mapping program made all those rivers, not DF.
The heightmap doesn't include a river/water flag.

The only thing that makes DF look too river-y is that it shows brooks on the region map, when brooks are probably too small to show up so prominently. But it's important when you starting a fort to know where brooks are

No no, df makes all those rivers, or at least shows brooks as being as prominent as rivers. Try just exporting a map from df legends mode and you'll see what I mean.

The ASCII export makes everything overly prominent and distorted.
If you're going to try to say that, at least use the pixel-based map:

Keep in mind I increased the amount of brooks on this map.

I was already talking about the pixel map, even one with default settings has a massive amount of rivers and brooks. I'm sure it has that many for gameplay reasons but you must admit that it looks kinda odd, like someone smashed glass and all the little fractures are made into lakes and rivers.

Why it must be a dwarven god.Yeah it doesn't look like it could hold that shape and might break into many islands.

Excellent. Now I can generate D&D worlds more easily.
