What VPS to Choose?
« on: January 06, 2010, 03:31:34 am »

I need to get a VPS for my website http://animalforest.no-ip.org

I also want to buy a domain name. Does anyone know of any good VPS/Domain Registration deals around?

I'm so lost in all the VPS's, it's really hard to find one, I just don't want to get ripped off.

Lets see. Linode is often recommended and according to everything I have read about them fantastic. You will need a strong grasp of Linux administration.

prgmr is even cheaper and—assuming that you know a lot about server administration—probably the best option. I do not thing that they provide DNS and domains, so you will probably need a DNS host and need to register your domains elsewhere.

Linode's okay, but their prices are a bit weird. I tend to use Mosso's Cloud Servers (actually a Slicehost rebrand); a 512MB slice will do for most websites and it runs about $20 a month. Assuming you don't have crazy bandwidth requirements, it should be around $8 cheaper than an equivalent Linode package. Both require decent Linux skills, but for a lot of websites the most you'll need is "apt-get install apache2 php5" or whatever and you're off to the races.

While Mosso is a Slicehost rebrand, Rackspace does the support themselves. This is a Really Good Thing; Rackspace's support is top-flight.

As for domain names, I just use NameCheap. Decent support, not too obnoxious policies, and relatively cheap.

Depends. What game, how many slots?

Edit: Oh, I see you made a game by yourself. Well, does it run on Linux (there are Windows VPS, but they are more expensive)? You will also have to evaluate whether the VPS has enough RAM, processor speed, …

It is written in java no? If so, then you will be fine that is the beauty of java in the first place: cross-platform. Yes make sure it has enough ram and processor speed, but from the looks of your game any computer should suffice for hosting the server unless you get high traffic.

Most of the little VPS companies ban game servers. Some of the larger ones do, too. Check their use agreements before signing up.

Mosso is now Rackspace Cloud.  They're quite nice.  They run on the same infrastructure as slicehost, with a slightly slicker interface for provisioning, and if you run a low-bandwidth site (I just run an irc bouncer) they tend to be cheaper than slicehost's flat rate.

For name service, I use Hover (formerly DomainDirect, aka Tucows).  It's a tad more expensive, but you get anonymization for free and without any slimy upselling or ad-filled domain parking.  I find it worth the cost of a latte and a scone every year to support a company that doesn't come off like used car salesmen.

I build websites for a living, and have several servers at slicehost, some on amazon's EC2, and one on the rackspace cloud.

Slicehost's support is tremendously better than the rackspace cloud's. When I can, I'm moving that server off of Rackspace.

There's a difference? I've got about half a dozen client servers on Rackspace Cloud and my personal, bandwidth-heavy VPS on Slicehost. I haven't noticed much of a difference.
