The firs time a diver sees an 8 metre long shark bearing down on them with its mouth wide open is going to be hilarious...

I've never seen a live whale shark. I bet that in the water they're terrifyingly deliberate in their movements.

What about Sperm Whales? Should we salute them too for the fear of giant squid invasion?

Yes, salute them as well.

Without them the squid would surely destroy us all.

No, squid should reign over us, but only if their cuttlefish masters keep them from hunting us to extinction. Seriously, squid are one of the few creatures that might out-human humans...

...

You know, that would certainly explain Cthulhu. Actually, nothing can explain that, never mind.

(I always thought Octopi were more intelligent and emotional an' stuff.)

EDIT: Cthulhu as in the Elder Thing beneath the deeps, not the Elder Thing that currently frequents this forum. ;D

Yes, The squid will be the soldiers and labourers, the other cephalopods will form the aristocracy and scientific bodies...

Octopi, not Squid, Squid are stupid even by 'fish' standards (yes i know they are not fish), Octopi are the smart ones.

And Octopi are the ones that can mimic texture as well as colour and thus are completely impossible to see unless they want you to see them.

There could be one in your bed right now and you'd never know.

Mimicing plaid is the first trick Octopus Special Operatives learn for infiltrating the surface world.

You are underestimating the power of Octopodian camoflague; it will be your downfall.
