Beginner modder
« on: January 05, 2010, 02:51:25 pm »

This is my first time modding anything ever, and predictably I've run into trouble. The new civ I've added refuses to show up.

Here's the file:

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You need to make the creature for the civ, too, assuming you haven't.

If you have made the creature, you should post it because the problem may lie there.

Could you post up the creature file as well?

Mine once didn't show up because I made a typo in the body-tag. (They spawned as limb-less torsos, and they instantly died.)

(Sorry, previous post wasn't there yet when I started typing the message.)

Care to elaborate so that other beginners don't make the same mistake?

There's a missing parenthesis between 2eyes and 2ears. But that can't be the only problem because it still doesn't work...

Did you generate worlds in between?

Have you made this 'chimer' language? that might cause problems... I think.

Ok this is really weird. I've actually seen it use words from the custom language file. This implies that my civ actually existed at one point right? Further I've seen several incidents where a site is simply called "town" or "forest retreat" instead of having the site named after the entity that founded it. But my custom civ is not playable and there's no trace of them in the legends.

I've heard stories that the game checks the filename of the files it reads to figure what's supposed to be in them. It may well just be a myth, but you might be better off changing the filenames to entity_chimer and creature_chimer just in case.

The towns you're seeing are likely ruins of sites that have been razed. The language thing is a bit different - I'm not sure if, for example, named creatures that don't use language files, such as megabeasts, take the name from any one specific language, or if they just grab a random word from any of them. Megabeasts seem to get "sensible" titles even if they've only ever killed kobolds, and kobolds only ever speak in nonsensespeak.

That did it! Much thanks. Someone really ought to add that to the wiki.

Another question: My civ seems to have replaced the goblins entirely. Is there a hard cap on the number of civs in game?
