It's a beta test. On the moon. It's not supposed to be a MMO yet. That's why they don't have a global server.

As well, the version of unreal engine they're using is entirely overpowered and overkill for what they're doing with it at the moment. This game could've been done perfectly well in the source engine for fuck sakes; we've all played the "plug the wire into the socket" minigame in HL2. This game is basically the same thing, but with more steps in between. In fact, it's entirely possible to recreate the gameplay in a custom map with the proper logic and entity interactions, no modding of anything needed at all.

I'm going to guess that the Unreal Engine was the cheapest thing NASA could license they could actually make a game with.  That, or they hired a lead programmer who only knew how to work with Unreal.  This is NASA's PR department we're talking about, not a development studio.

Hey, I have no idea what it costs to license any particular engine.  I'm just saying they probably didn't know what they were doing.  If Unreal is the expensive engine, then some overeager executive probably decided to splurge on the big ticket, thinking it would look cool and make the game better.

How dare the government take away our government funded video games after the amazing success that was America's Army 3.0!!!!!!!!!!11 THAT THING ALONE HAS MADE THE AMERICAN ARMY WHAT IT IS TODAY.

Well, keep in mind NASA is looking for people with sizeable IQs and abilities, not naive teens that play shooters and join the army through recruiters that tell them the army will fix all their problems forever  :-\

Though yea, how much more would it cost them to use HL's engine, or hell, write a new one?

It wouldn't cost them anything to use the source engine. They aren't selling the game after all. Writing a new engine however, would cost them, big time.

It was also didn't cost them a dime to use the Unreal Engine.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

Don't they intend to charge a subscription fee?

Detect the sarcasm, man. We're aware. Hell, we're saying the same thing. Just indirectly.

And Dakk's right, you can mod the source engine as much as you want as long as you don't profit off of it. I hear it's a real pain to code in though. Maybe they're just lazy. :p

It doesn't seem like that at all, it seems more of an edutainment thing than a money maker. Though the idea of an MMORPG funding the government/space program would be ridiculous, hilarious and scary all at the same time.

They are using the unreal engine because thats what AA3 uses and since they got the guys from AA to help them out it only logical to assume that they would use that.

BTW Downloading it from steam at the moment.

EDIT: I propose to change topic name to "NASA's moonbase alpha".

EDIT EDIT: Why do people say on page 4 that you have to subscribe to a monthly fee?
I can just install and play with steam without subscribing or paying anything.

Ok, this is a really big guess based on what I've read....

This isnt the MMORPG or whatever. This is a "test", sort of like a throw away. It may be in the game, it likely wont be, eh. Sort of like how game developers create things that they know wont go in the game, but show to their "bosses" their progress.

By releasing it to the public, they can squish bugs faster. Or maybe this is a "teaser". Or maybe its just part of the PR to show they are making progress.

I dont really think its likely that this is all they're going to make. I mean, it even has the name "Alpha", if thats related at all.
