Year 13

Rumors have been going around the mountainhomes. They started in late spring, right after the elves left.

Each story differs, but the general agreement is that the elves offended our mighty King Sigun in some way, and he has been planning a way to get back at them.

It couldn't be with violence though, at least not yet, considering the humans, elves, and dwarves have all signed a pact ever since the orcs were sighted.

I was sitting at the tavern, drinking rum and eating some rhesus macaque biscuits when Obok Tomesoothe came in. He was the outpost liason, what was he doing here?

He stood there for a minute, caught site of me, and said "You. Come with me." I downed the last of my rum, tipped Ablel, the barkeep, and followed Obok.

With him were six others, all looking as confused as I felt, and some guards to no doubt keep us from going back to whatever it was we were doing. We followed him for a while, walking through the tunnels to the surface. We stopped at a wagon.

He turned to us and said, "You seven have been chosen by King Sigun to build a great fortress. In this wagon are the supplies you will need to start off, and survive until the dwarf trade caravan comes." The guards forced the others into the wagon. Obok looked at me, handed me what looked to be a map, and a letter of some sort. "Sigun has chosen you to be the leader of this expedition. The map shows you where you will go, and the letter has the kings hand-written description and specifications for the fortress. Go now, and don't look back."

As the seven of us started riding out of the mountain home, I looked at the map.



The first thing I noticed was the elf village to the west, maybe the rumors were true.

After looking at the map for a bit longer, I opened up the letter:

    "Mr. Beanchubbs
           You and the six dwarves that are undoubtedly sitting around you as you read this have been selected for the task of defending dwarven pride and honor. You've most likely heard by now of my... incident... with the elves. Your goal will be to build a tower. A tower so great, that the elf village to the west will lie in it's shadow and fear the dwarves that made it. Go now, and construct the first great wonder of this world.

Alright, this is the first community fort I've made, and my first attempt at writing.
I will only be using cage traps, and there dig deeper orcs.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Alright, just 5 more and we can start.

Also, the reason I'm not using a terrifying biome is because this is my first community fort and I don't want to totally screw things up.

I might start soon even if no one else signs up, just so I can get the first update out tonight. I'll try to get at least one done per day, that will most likely change on how much happens in each update.

Sorry for the double post, the fortress will be started a little smidgen more south than I had planned, but that is to get the necessary z-levels to at least make a decent sized tower.

Last post in a row, sorry. I've started the fort, the extra 2 dwarves are:
1. Woodcrafter / skilled stone crafter / skilled bone carver - female
2. Proficient grower / competent brewer / herbalist - male

Sorry Filiusenox, I wasn't paying attention and you are female. If it makes you feel any better, my guy is female too.

I'll see if I can do the update in the morning if I can't finish it by tonight.

I'll take the crafter lady.

And, name her Humerus.

Her background? She is an obsessed sort, she sees "art" in anything she gets her hands on, and tries to create that art. She was carving an old skull when she was found. When not crafting, she tends to stare off into some distance.

If at all possible, she would like to eventually craft her own bone crossbow, bolts, bone/shell armor, and learn to use them well!

School was cancelled today, I might be able to get a few updates in today.
Some strange things happened.

Diary of Beanchubbs
     It's the early spring of the year 13. King Sigun has requested that Me and six others, all of whom I introduced myself to on the wagon ride to the site.

    When the wagon was coming in from the north, I noticed the fingers of a chasm as we rolled by. I also saw a few of the monsters that inhabited it. They were definately going to be a problem later on. The magma pipe marked on the map was right next to the chasm. Clearing out either one of those was going to be a problem with them right next to eachother.



 
    I called the wagon to a halt when we were where a gaint red X was marked on the map.

   We were in the middle of a small canyon. The first order of business was to set up a food source, not to mention a way to get booze. I ordered Fil to mine a tunnel from where our entrance would be towards the forest, where soil would be.
   While he was doing that, Derm set up his mechanics and carpenter shop so he could be ready when the time came. Humerus did the same, but immedietly started making crafts, saying something about "art in the stone".
   She was a rather strange dwarf, from what I was told by the others. Apparently when Obok found her, she was curled up in a dark alley with a dwarf skull, carving something into it. There was no time to ask questions, as we had to leave immedietly.
   Ungulateman was playing around with the cats, despite him having said he would butcher them easily, I doubt that will happen


   I was looking around for 100killer, but he wasn't near the wagon. I looked all around. He was already chopping down parts of the forest. His hate for the elves must run as deep as the king's.

  Everyone else was busy, so I decided to grab some stone, and start building the walls and trade depot so that could just be done.
  After a while, Fil came back up, covered in the dust left from the obsidian, and promptly collapsed onto the floor due to exhaustion. Derm saw this, looked at me, and turned back to his carpentry shop and built some beds so we wouldn't have to sleep in the ground for long.
  Since Fil was sleeping, I figured I would take on his masonry duties for a small while, so I set up the masonry workshop, and built some tables and chairs so we could have a proper dining hall. After that was done, Fil woke up, shoved me out of her workshop, and built some doors to put in the rooms that she would dig later on. By the time spring was done, we all  had a bedroom, a steady food supply, and a nice little dining room.
  The next thing that needed to get done was to put everything in a stockpile inside.
Fil dug out a furniture and goods stockpile, and a foods stockpile. That was all we'd need for now. We all walked outside to admire our 3 months work, and we were quite proud of ouselves. I was about to give some more order when I notice something. Someone was missing. Then it hit me.
  I asked,"Has anyone seen Ungulateman?"
  Fil replied "No, I've been digging this whole time, haven't been paying much attention to y'all."
  Hilbo just shook his head and took a huff from his pipe.
  100killer just shrugged and walked off.
  From the hills there was a faint sound. Almost like a dwarf... we rushed outside and saw Ungulateman being chased by a batman from the chasm. I would have asked 100killer to get it, but he was drinking some of Hilbo's new brew (which was quite delicious by the way). I saw him dive under a boulder and the batman flew past it, searching from him like a giant eagle. After 30 seconds, he got up and ran as fast as his stout little legs could carry him. He kind of did a sliding fall on his face motion and dove into the protection of the walls. He made an awkward grabbing for his back, which he wasn't quite able to reach

We helped him inside and to his room, where his cats were waiting for him.

  A few days later, Ungulateman started screaming "NNNOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
I ran outside to see him on his knees on top of the bridge, and looked where his eyes were pointed, his cats were being chased by the same batman that messed up his back.
  "Come inside now!" I said, he just sat there, so I grabbed him by the arms and dragged him in.
  "Pull the lever Derm!" I yelled. As he ran into the meeting hall, where the bridge lever was, I saw one of Ungul's cats make a dart for the fort. I tried to see where Derm was, but it was too late, the bridge came crashing upon Sakzul, Ungul's first pet.
  He screamed NOOOOOO again, and then we heard some cat-like screams from the hills... the batman got Dakost, one of Ungul's other cats. He kind of froze up and after a few minutes, just walked away.



  I had a chair built for me, so I could write records of everything we had. When malachite rolled around, I heard a knocking at the door.
  "Come in."
  Humerus walked in, looking kind of confused. "What's wrong?" I asked. To which she replied, "We have some guests Bean."

Alrighty then, first update.
I've never gotten migrants this early, and I'm not sure why they came.
Ungulateman basically got totally hosed the whole summer, so I had Humerus smooth his room. He's Very Unhappy right now.
There are now 10 more dwarfs up for claims:
Male animal dissector
Male weaver/clothier
Male woodcrafter
Female fisherdwarf
Male miller
Female tanner
3 female peasants
1 male peasant

Sorry if the update wasn't very good, I've never been very good at writing, but I'd figure I'd give it another try.

Edit: I will most likely turn the peasants into military if nobody claims them soon.

Ungulateman is happy now, thankfully, I didn't want a dwarf killing themself already.

  With the arrival of the new migrants, our food source had to be expanded. Fil got dug out some space for it and a new communal barracks so they can sleep in, and the military can train in, once we raise one.



  This farm space will last us for quite a while, so no more worrying about that for a while at least.
  The next two months were rather uneventful. Fil dug out the barracks, weapon and armor storage, and an archery range. Ungulateman butchered some puppies and a muskox.

The days wore on with nothing to exciting happening, till one day, the new miller, who's name no one has told me, started screaming and hissing in a demonic language that no one under stood. He bolted out of the fortress to Humerous' workshop, threw her out of it, grabbed a wood log, and started working furiously.
 
After a week, he was finished, and he held up his product for all to see.
 
Nothing special. At least the demon spirit is out of him now though.
  I was sitting in my office, taking stock of what we had once again (I was getting quite good at it, some would say I am a legend), when Humerous walked in.
  "2 things, first of all, the caravan and diplomat have arrived, so you might want to deal with them, and secondly, I wanted to ask you something."
  "Sure, anything, what is it?"
  "Since a few craftsdwarves came with that migrant wave, I was wondering if I could make some armor and weapons. Then use them myself, we do need a military afterall, and I'm quite good at carving bones, I could use some of the dog bones that Ungul got."
  I was forming the word sure in my mouth but she spouted "Alright thanks!" and bolted out.
 
  I ordered some of Humerous' crafts to be brought to the depot. As I got there, Zasit, the leader of the dwarven caravan, came up and greeted me.
  "I thought you were s'posed to be buildin' some sorta' tower 'ere."
  "Yeah, yeah... we haven't gotten to that quite yet. I have some peasants working on making blocks, we want this thing to look nice. Now, about the trading."
  "Ah yes, we'll get 'at done then."
  I showed him what we had, and when I opened up the bin of obsidian crafts that we had, Zasit's eyes widened as he stared at them. We'd be getting good prices for these.
   We traded a bin of the obsidian goods for food, ropes, booze, another pick and some other essentials. However, we did not get an anvil. They only brought steel ones, and I was not about to pay full price for a steel anvil. I decided we would get one when the humans arrive with their iron goods.
   I had one of the peasants, I don't quite remember his name yet, grab the pick and help out Fil with the workshop room we were planning on making.
   I went to meet with Edem, the liason (Obok must have had other things to do), but she was already talking with Ungulateman. He must've claimed that he was the leader of this little expedition. Whatever, I can't stand liasons. He ordered some more food, booze, and an iron anvil.

  After Edem left, there were more screams to be heard coming from over the hill. The chasm beasts claimed their second victim.

   As winter settled in, we had a nice cozy little fortress up. Humerous had made her crossbow and armor, we built a watch tower for her, and she kept watch most of the time. On the 10th of moonstone, she started yelling that more migrants were coming.



As they came in one by one, they said hello to me then walked on into the fort. When the last one came, Humerous screamed another alarm at the top of her lungs. This time it wasn't more migrants. Orcs had set their sights upon us.

I didn't show it, but i drafted 100killer9 to the military because a woodcutter came along with the second wave of migrants. These migrants are getting annoying, I can't keep up with making rooms.

Now the dwarfs won't bring anything we need because the leason died, she decided to go to the chasm rather than back the way she came.

There are now a total of 18 available spots.

  As soon as we heard of the orcs coming, we raised the drawbridge and locked ourselves inside the fort. Life continued on like this for quite a while, us staying inside, while the orcs waited outside.
  The engraver started going insane and spouting nonsense and running through the halls in mid-winter. He ran into one of the craftdwarfs workshop in the workshop room and stayed there for quite a while.

  What came of this was actually quite nice.


  I ordered one of the peasants to start training with 100killer9, so they could get some experience, and I had Humerous stay in the watch tower to... watch the orcs.



  The days kept rolling on like this, nothing much happened, until 100killer stepped into my office with a very guilty and sad look on his face.
  "What happened?" I asked (I seem to ask that quite a lot)
  "Umm.. I might need a new training partner."
  "And why's that? didn't I just assign you one?"
  "You did.. but uh, he's kind of.. not.. living.. anymore."
  *sigh* "Alright, bring his corpse outside, we don't want any of the other dwarves to see it and get sick from the smell. You're not going to get a new training partner quite yet though."


  With one death and an orc siege waiting outside, I was beginning to worry. Until Humerous declared from a perch that spring had arrived, and with it, the orcs left.
  All the dwarfs let out an audible sigh and we continued our work with a little happier atmosphere. Also along the lines of good news, we have set up a little smelter shop over the magma. The imps have yet to bother us, and they seem to be very far down in the pipe.
  When Humerous called down that the elves have arrived, which we had all expected, 100killer stopped what he was doing, made a snarl, and stormed off to his room. I would have appeased him, and allowed him to at least bully the elves, but we needed some wood, we only had one log left, and the new migrant who had replaced 100killer in his chopping duties went to go cut some trees, but Humerous yelled at him to stop, and that orcs were comming one again, this time from 3 directions. We had to let the elves get in though, despite the fact that our goal was to intimidate the elves, we needed wood, and they probably had some. I waited until the last second  for the elves to get in, the orcs were hot on their heels, but the timing was perfect.


We brought our crafts over to see how much wood they had.
  "Why hello there, kind dwarf, I see you have a bit of an orc problem. I hope coming here won't be this dangerous in the future."
  I merely shot him a glance that must have been quite scary, by judging the look on the skinny bastard's face. "Where is your wood?"
  "Righ.. right here. We will give you all of it for some of those crafts.'
  "Are you kidding me?! Three logs? That's it? Take the damn crafts and piss off."
  I gathered the three logs in my arms, walked out, and slammed the depot door behind me.
  Telling them to piss off really didn't do anything, considering the fact that if we opened the bridge, we would let in a squad of orcs which we most likely could not handle. So I locked the door and once again, we continued about our daily lives.
 
  I've been trying to not include my personal life, however I would record an event like this with any other dwarf too. Ungulateman and I have decided to get married!


  It's been a few weeks since we left the elves in the depot. Humerous has been shooting the orcs near our gates for a while, but she has only killed 2 of thembecause we've only been able to use the bone bolts. She is becoming quite skilled with that crossbow of hers though.


  We've run out of bolts and bones to make them. Humerous' kill count is 4, and 100killer's is 3 now. The elfs went berserk and killed their mounts, so I sent him in to do what he does best, and he was quite pleased indeed. All they had that wasn't the wood was some cloth and clothes that are far too large for us. Oh well, 100killer is happy, and we didn't instigate the fight with the elves.




  The orcs are still out there. Humerous said that some of the orcs destroyed a group of antmen as they were running for our fort, she saw the flies around their rotting corpses.

Woot, first update with no migrants. The engraver with the fey mood is now legendary and is decorating our fortress quite well. I have two dwarfs pumping out blocks at all times, so as soon as the orcs leave we can get started on the tower. The orcs should, in theory, leave soon, because the last orcs stayed for about a season, and these guys have been here for almost a season.

Ummmm... Yeah....



Orc bowmen + stupid dwarves = tantrum + pull switch = all orcs charge = death.

Luckily there wasn't much interest in this fort, it got destroyed. This is the second time orcs have totally massacred my entire fortress themselves.

The legendary engraver got scared by the orcs on the hill when he was going to bring in some goods from the depot, and for some reason ran up the ramp. Boworcs shot him, he went back down, Ungul went to save him, got scared by orcs on hill, ran up ramp, got shot and killed, and that cycle continued till a peasant snapped and flipped the switch then the orcs massacred everything.

All your fort are belong to orcs.
