Crusader Kings Succession Game
« on: January 04, 2010, 01:38:42 pm »

As discussed in my CKDV LP, let us try to start a succession game!

First off, who wants play?

Next, we need to agree on a game.
CK,
CK+DV,
CK+DV+mod(s)?

My Let's Play is done with Crusader Kings + Deus Vault + 2.1 beta patch + DVIP + DVIP addon + BOPACK
I get some weird events with no names every now and then, but otherwise that set of games/mods works well for me (I assume the problems are from DVIP and/or BOPACK).

We will also need to figure out the succession rules... Off the top of my head some ideas:
  • play until the ruler dies (this can result in some very long and very short turns...)
  • play for a set number of game years
  • play for a set amount of real life time
  • play until some specified in game conditions are met
  • ???other ideas???

also, we have some neat options on how the game is passed on;
  • next player on list gets the save
  • heirs are claimed by players, who in turn play if/when their character rules
  • ???other ideas???

Plus any other 'rules' we may want- such as rules on save scumming, rules on restarts, rules on what you can or can not do in game, etc...

So, if you are interested please start chiming in!

ME!

edit: the mods you are using are fine for me, since I use the same.

I vote for claiming sons and succession when ruler dies.

I second that motion. Also, how on earth do you take as many screen shots?

I use Fraps to take screenshots and I keep notes on a sheet of paper.
Then I use a 30 day trial of Snagit to batch resize (to 70%) and rename the jpgs to sequential 4 digit numbers.
I go through my notes and use Windows Photo Viewer to look at the screenies (using in-game date in notes and pic to stay synced) while I write up the updates, pasting in my generic spolier tags+path and putting in the pic number as I go
At some point I upload all the images, usually before even starting the update.

Once my Snagit trial runs out I'll probably write my own rename batch file and use photoshop to resize them.
then again I may just buy Snagit.

I really wish I could do this, unfortunately my damn laptop won't run crusader kings, so whilst I am desktopless I'm also crusader kingless too. :(

I agree with andrea, but I doubt I'll actually participate. I've never had the patience to deal with screenshots and such, but it's possible that I'll participate somewhere down the line of succession.
Also, I think overly gamey tactics should be prohibited, (teleporting your troops home by disbanding them, to name one fresh in memory.) No assassination of claimed sons would also make sense as a rule.
Savescumming rules wouldn't be very enforceable, though. I could see justification in savescumming if you end up with a reign of a year, anyway.

If someone totally screws over and loses the game what's the rule then? Revert to last save and play more cautiously or hand it over to someone else?

Revert to last save ought to be the rule. We want fun, and a better variety of fun might be provided through reverting.

I don't think screenshots are necessary, much less so at great frequency. A few would be nice, maybe to show important people and/or places. And I doubt it would be necessary to even report all events, just the big ones.
The only reporting I think truly important would be at least a quick update on the state of the realm and maybe a brief summary of how it got there during your reign- otherwise the next player can figure out most everything on his/her own just by looking at the save themselves.

I agree killing (by assassin) a claimed heir should be against the rules, but I suppose if they war you, you should be allowed to shut them down. And I can foresee possible scenarios where a claimed heir could be an independent realm leader that you may have justifiable cause to go to war against...

If someone totally screws over and loses the game what's the rule then? Revert to last save and play more cautiously or hand it over to someone else?
On this note, I think it is important to distinguish the difference between getting totally screwed over and losing the game.
Losing the game means dynasty ends or loses all titles. Getting screwed over means anything else bad, but still playable.
I vote that we should continue playing even should someone get screwed over... SO even if someone manages to lose two King titles, 6 Duke titles, 5 Count titles, all vassals and is left with one count title and a liege, we should continue playing:-) It will create a challenge for the next person:-)

Yes when I said screwed over I literally meant you get the game over screen. Anything less should mean soldiering on!

I'd love to participate, but my internet is not all too fast right now, and uploading all the pics to make it interesting would be a pain in the ass. Otherwise, I'd totally claim an heir and jump in.

I think this would totally be fun!

I'm not sure that my time would allow me to participate, but I can sure make a great effort!

I also think I can be rather amusing at times, and would make an interesting ruler.  ;D

(though I will need all the mods. All I have is base CK and DV)

I'm not quite ready to start a game right now...
I suggest everyone dust off their CKDV, install the patches and mods I list
(go to paradox's forums to get all the necessary stuff) and test to make sure it works/re-get used to game.

We will also need to select our starting Title.

Start as a count is a pain in the ass, but I aways start as a count, it makes the endgame feel more rewarding, and its fun to claim your way into kinghood.
