I'll give the cramped meeting area try a go, and see what happens. At least I will next winter, need to get defenses up before we get goblins on our doormat.

And the avatar is Yūko Ichihara the dimensional witch from Xxxholic. ;)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

and Rum is much better, though I could have put just 'inspector' and fit her personality.

Another year has gone by. And I feel much better about our defenses. I did a small amount of stockpile tweaking by adding a metal ore stockpile, a stone furniture stockpile, expanding the animal holding pens, and removing the empty barrel, bag, and bin stockpile out of the walkway.

Sigun has decided to rename herself Rum, Inspector Rum as a nickname.

Along with that, we have traps set up in our entrance tunnel, as well as 4 long lever operated drawbridges to crush anything that we deem too dangerous to let in further.

The elves brought more sun berries, as well as a full bag of sun berry seeds. I bought just about everything except their empty cages, large clothing, and assorted wood trinkets. Of particular note is the tame wolf they brought, whom I've added to the communal cage.

Humans brought us a large amount of wood and fish, as per my request, and I told them to basically bring the same next year. They did bring two aluminum bars as well, that I purchased with more of Larn's food, and some of Eli's new bonecrafts. Rum was especially happy with her new material, and I allowed one of the bars to make the new wood furnace near the carpenter's workshop.

I had Eli train some more war dogs as the first batch of puppies had grown to adulthood. And I allowed each of us seven to choose one war dog as an escort and pet. Dantan surprized me by immediately taking pity on the dog that had been bitten by the cave spider. She named it
Mebzuth Likotenseb, or "Mebsuth Inkbasic".

As winter approached I decided to let that season be one of relaxation and social activities. To promote such, I've had Hedge build what I call the 'Social Shack' outside in our courtyard.

The season brought the marriage of Hexed and Larn, but no one else has yet to connected, even though we are becoming quite skilled in social graces.

Hah, some social shack that is!

Well, congratulations to... ehr, me and Hexed, I guess.
Now if we'd just start forming some bearded babies we'll have saved the entire dwarven race!  ;D

Haha! It has been a long time indeed since I read Xxxholic. Only got to second serise before I found out about Dogs -Bullets and Carnage. I quickly abandond ship and went to that one. I guess when I'm up to speed with Bleach I'll mossy on back and start again.

Also nice work with this. Have you left the time it takes dwarf children to mature? It will be a very long time before any of thw work gets passed around otherwise.

A thief found its way inside the complex somehow, I'm not sure if he took a wrong turn or what, but he was found as rum was taking a bit of trash out to the refuse pile. He had war dogs in front of him, and no place to go behind him. Amazingly there was only one chunk ripped out before it died. Perhaps it was just too small to chew.

*

The elves brought giant jaguar matching ours! We now have a breeding pair! Along with a groundhog, deer, elk, and grizzly bear. Brewed sunshine(with barrel), some ropes, drinks, berries, and thread.

This spring we did a massive animal stock. We moved the two new Jaguars into pens just south of the raccoons, and then I ordered all the extra dogs, and the one or two adult raccoons and donkeys that were 2nd generation to be slaughtered.

I've also ordered Eli to make a few totems and bone items, so we don't overfill our stockpile.

The humans arrive, with a goblin ambush! And a fatal flaw in my outer wall, letting the goblins sit atop one of the hills and rain arrows down into the social shack. I've ordered all dwarves inside, but one war dog refuses to move and got shot by goblin bows. Checking the lists, I find it was Datan Sazirkab, the war dog chosen to escort Hexed, perhaps it gave it's life to save her, we will never know. For now, I hope the goblins run afoul of the traps we have set up for them.

~
Let's try that again... everyone rushed out to refill traps, and got slaughtered, so savescum time.
~

*Back to early spring

Testing our defenses I've made a couple adjustments while the elves arrive, one being a channel above our tunnel to designate an 'outdoor' wall. This way, I can give one clear order to all the dwarves not to go outside, and they will stay behind that line.

I'm also planning to extend the height of our outdoor wall, but work will begin on that after the elves are finished.

Seems like I already traded with the elves once, but we brought the roasts up again, and this time came away with a male wolf to match with our female, a pair of matched cougars, and a fox. They also had some brewed sunshine with them, but very little other drinks. Traded for some wood weapons to populate future weapon traps, and some berries and thread, and got rid of these excessive seed roasts with low value. Need to use them up and not buy anymore seeds I think. they keep getting stuck in my teeth.

As summer arrives, we found a camel in one of our stone traps. apparently it and a few other camels decided to run down the tunnel and try to steal food? Not sure why else a camel would want to come in here. But None the less, we will butcher it and any others who get caught.

The humans brought a whole slew of wood, metal, and charcoal. Not as much meat this time around, but seeing as how we have plenty at this point, I'm not too worried. They brought two caged horses, I'm hoping one of them is a mare. Along with some mog juice and assorted drinks and iron weapons we bought quite a bit. I even gave them a couple roasts to take to their leader.

It seems we are in luck with the horses, a breeding pair. The animal pens are filling up nicely I think. Maybe not as exotic as I may have liked, but it's interesting at least, and will keep us in meat if we have to leave the floodgate shut for an extended siege.

I told Rogon to bring us charcoal and weapons next summer. Stonefall traps are nice and all, but I'd feel better with the tunnel lined with assorted weaponry. It's more impressive as well, at least I think.

The hill north of us was supposed to contain an underground river. Without a way to tap into that resource, or at least find it, underground tower-cap farms will be impossible.

I gave the other to construct a tunnel across the chasm just north of the stone works after the goods from the human caravan had been stockpiled. And once that was finished we started exploratory digging north where the river was supposed to be sourced.

However, with all the aquifer in the mountain, it became exceedingly difficult to tunnel to, we even broke the water table at least once and had to wall off the area to stop flooding. I've consulted with Rogon before he left about what the best plan of action is. He said that humans would tunnel sink holes down from above, and hope no one falls in when the river is discovered.

I thought this was a good idea, so sent Dantan out to start digging.

Before we could even get started, I was told that Rum had dug herself up from where we had accidentally broken the aquifer, so I told her to keep digging, find the river, then dig herself out. And it wasn't long before we found it!

Luckily Rum made it back inside, as shortly after our Cat decided since the floodgates were up it could run outside and kill vermin in the open. This was bad for the cat, but good for us, as they found a goblin ambush party just outside the tunnel. I ordered the dwarves to stay inside, hopefully the traps will take care of them.

While we waited anxiously to see if our trap defenses would work, Hexed gave a cry, and the halls were filled with the sound of a newborn dwarf's cry. A girl! We may yet be able to survive the destruction of the species. Hexed named her Arcayna.

With this birth, the first official family has been declared here in Subetnasod. Hexed and Larn will lead the Azure clan. An old name of dwarves, supposedly in relation to the color of the god metal. Hopefully we will see many more babies, and the hope is that we will survive long enough to see them grow into a thriving community.

Aha! The bridge trap works wonders, almost too well. The goblins were destroyed completely, their screams as the giant stone mechanism went into effect echoed out over the desert. I'd like to think it would stop any more goblins, but I know better. However, I have decided to try and use the bridges only as a last resort.

As we were putting up the new defenses, Rum ran into a Master Goblin thief, trying to steal Arcayna. Annoying as this may seem, Rum would have none of it, and a few well placed pick swings ended that goblins run on this fortress.

This also gives Rum as being the first dwarf here to kill anything other than animals.

Winter blasted by peacefully now that the goblins were out of the way.

--
And now time for some stonesense images:

Another angle on the social shack. Gives an outdoor view of the chasm tunnel, and the extended wall for that north section.

The new defenses, even if uncomplete. The wall section is there to block arrows from goblins being attracted by the chained dogs, traps will be all around there, and the three wide tunnel to the north(down in the picture) for human wagons. You can also see a good amount of the animal processing area.

This is the river we found, I actually used stonesense to tell me where it is. But that's not exact so hence the crazy digging around the aquifer and flooding below and multiple tunnels of uselessness. Tower cap farm will be created soon though! Maybe some water features using the chasm and aquifer. Put that annoying thing to good use.

The elves have arrived, and we were bringing some roasts to the depot when it was decided that there probably was no need. An ambush of goblins met the elves right at the gate, and the likelyhood of them surviving to make it through to us is slim.

This is... very odd. The first goblin ambush just ran away. I suppose they were scared at being discovered, either that or they were a distraction for those already in the tunnel, the 2nd group has engaged the elves, so there should be casualties this time.

I don't believe it... These goblins are very odd. Why are they letting the elves go, and why do they flee when they see the elves at our tunnel entrance. I looked into things in the few records we had from the humans, about the goblin civilization.

Most of the goblin civilization is run by elves! No wonder they seem to be giving each other a wide berth. Both goblin ambushes have left, and the merchants continue on their way to our depot like nothing had happened. The lead merchant tugs his muskox forward, even ignoring a visible scratch that the 2nd goblin ambush inflicted upon him. I begin to worry just how much we should trust these pointy-ears.

Maybe it was the sheer amount of elves heading to us that scared the goblins away. I count three muskox, and at least three more camels, each being led by one elf. Hopefully they bring something interesting in all that after the excitement on entering.

The lead elf named Thaci dodged my questions about the ambushes, and offered greetings from a civilization named Inale Moyo. I'm told that it translates to 'The Vegetation of Myth'. I suppose that's better than some elven names. At least it seems to have some sort of strength behind it.

The cages of this caravan brings us a fox, another racoon, a deer, a giant Jaguar, a two-humped camel, from Thaci's own merchant stock, and a black bear. A few of Larns masterfully made roasts, and all the animals, some rope, a bunch of drinks, wooden weapons, berries and threads are added to our stockpile. I even gave Thaci a prickle berry roast worth more than 5,000 dwarfbucks to bring back as a gift to their leader.

At this point after all that drama, it dawns on me, if the goblins are scared of these pointy ears, it can't hurt to have them on our side. They seem to be catching many amazing animals, and arn't bringing the endless amounts of cloth that some elven groups are known to bring.

Eli brought me a report as soon as all the animals were brought to the animal center. The Camel the elves brought matches the camel that helped pull our initial wagon, The giant Jaguar, and the fox, are both females, making breeding pairs with the males we have in the communal cage.

As summer arrives, the humans come with it. As with the elves, it seems the goblins are here as well. Lets see how the humans deal with them, or if they will just go their seperate ways like with the elves.

The humans made short work of the goblins, but it seems a couple humans were killed in the process.

Another smaller group being led by a human guard with three goblin bowmen jumped out of hiding just north of the tunnel into the ramp.

This time the humans didn't make it out so well. One of the wagons was destroyed by the guard, and while the caravan mercenaries took to hacking away at the goblins, there were several casualties. The merchants left running for their lives, but we get to keep what was dropped. It's going to take months to clean all this up.

During the big push to clean up the desert, Hexed managed to give birth to a baby boy. She may end up being the end of the dwarven race. But her children should populate this fortress.

As autumn arrives, Hexed has changed the baby boy's name to Vieto. I'm not quite sure why, but the boy seems healthy enough. He's coughing a little due to the lack of people cleaning with all these items to haul in, and the rats have scared him some since we lost our cat. On the bright side, one of us has already pulled a caged cat in from one of the destroyed wagons, so vermin will die once more.

~
Whew, we survived... but I'm not sure how. At the cost of 2 war dogs, we managed to turn back another goblin ambush as we were caught with our pants down trying to drag crap back into the fort. For now I've forbidden all of it, and will let it sit for now, nothing is as important as the few lives we have here. Eli will train some new dogs, Dantan's dog Mebzuth was the one who found the ambush just west of the wall, giving us time to close things off and get inside. Rum lost her dog as well in the tunnel holding off the attackers as they approached the traps.

However this was not the end of them, as the final goblin retreated, the human that led this ambush arrived and started his run on the fortress. Bolstered by it's leader, the goblin moved to follow as it returned to the fortress. The goblin was killed by traps along the way, but the human deftly stepped over them(stupid humans as friendly code), Rum, positioned herself at the end of the trade depot with a crossbow, determined to fend off what she could.

The ambush is over, with the only damage being additionally Hedge's dog, and the poor front gate war dog. We will claim the items from the entrance tunnel, and then shut things off. I want more traps set up before we open them again in spring.

As I survey the aftermath, I noticed that Eli is giving a great deal of praise and love to one of the war dogs, asking what is going on, I'm told that this dog was actually the one to kill that human who was attacking. Eli has named it Uzineve, 'Ironflickered'.

In the Hopes that this hero of a war animal would be adopted, I told Hedge, Dantan, and Rum to choose new escort pets. Dantan and Rum both chose strays with nothing special about them, but Hedge choose the poor dog with the mangled head and mangled rear leg! I tried to talk him out of it, but he was set upon the action.

I've given Uzineve the honored spot at the trade depot, I hope he finds a thief or two to bite in his new station. The injured dog, was named Inul Vucarkobel by Hedge, I'm told the last name means 'Urnsummits'. Hopefully he won't bleed to death from his injuries.

~

...
Inul just triggered a stonefall trap at our entrance and killed itself. I suppose it's probably for the best, but Hedge isn't happy about it. I still don't understand what he was expecting, the poor beast had been through alot. I've asigned our last two dogs to Hedge to try and cheer him up, but I fear he will come to me to yell at. At the same time Eli will have to train some more war dogs for the front gate.

Sometime during all this, Arcayna has grown into a child, and has begun running around. She's keeping me sane at least, seeing the bright smile of a young dwarf is great for morale. She also reminded me that she had no bed, so I set up a bed for her, as well as a crib for her brother in the same room as her parrents. Hopefully by the time she's grown, we will have more perminant sleeping arrangements.

The animals have been breeding nicely, and a fair amount of time has been spent chasing down assorted puppies, fox pups, wolf pups, donkey foals, and cougar cubs. I'm looking forward to the assorted meat variety.

Hmm, it seems a single goblin survived to try and ambush us when we first opened the floodgates again to check the traps. It was quickly taken care of by Larn's dog Mosus. Not that there was much left to take care of, the traps are soaked with blood, and the bridge we lowered after the other ambushes seems a bit... smeared...

After that, while we were still rigging the traps, a goblin snatcher appeared right next to the kid and Hexed. It was well into the fortress however, and there was no chance of it getting out alive after being spotted. The dogs tore it to pieces. I think Larn's dog got the kill, but I'm not certain in the mess.

Winter is spent mostly dragging items around, making some bins to store assorted junk, and making sure we are safe within our own walls.

Next year will hopefully bring less death. After all this, I've decided that we will not leave the safety of our walls, and keep that floodgate closed when we don't have a merchant going in or out. If they die, I will offer condolances, but there is little we can do. And no more seasons of nothing but grabbing crap to bring in. As spring arrives we've started work on a waterfall in the dining hall, and finishing the shaft to bring sunlight in there.

---
So much stress from this. I savescummed several times as autumn hit and two ambushes attacked while we were spread out grabbing goblin junk. No more of that, we will stay underground in the safety of our walls from now on. Merchants can fend for themselves, and get a free meal to their leader to make up for deaths, assuming they make it to the depot, meh.
