1. Planescape: Torment
2. Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
3. Age of Wonders
4. The Longest Journey
5. Thief: The Dark Project

Other ones that I couldn't fit:
Thief 2 (pretty much the same game with more, better missions)
Baldur's Gate 2
Dwarf Fortress
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2
No One Lives Forever 2.

I still don't think Dwarf Fortress is great enough at the moment to warrant the top pick; it should be a bit more integrated.  It'll get up there as Toady keeps working on it.

    * Dorf Fortwess
Because.

    * System Shock 2
Awesome game, has LAN-TCP/IP co-op. Seriously needs to be remade.

    * Half-Life 2
Because it's what TF2, L4D, and mods are based on for the source engine. I'd pick regular half-life, but kinda forgot. But HL2 has better physics so it'll do.

    * Starcraft
Most influential RTS yet.

    * Diablo 2
Mot influential ARPG. Would've picked torchlight, but that's not as encompassing as D2

1. TES: Morrowind
2. Arcanum
3. DF
4. Garry's Mod
5. Stronghold Crusaders
6. Scratches
7. Spelunky
8. Captain Forever
9. Audiosurf
10. Empire Earth II

I've exclude all the really good PC games that I actually played on console, like:
GTA:SA, CoD4, Half Life 2, Portal, and probably a couple more.

I feel that The Sims would be 11.
Black and White would be 12.

I think like I missed a really important one...
I suppose I'll freak out later and edit.

1. Planescape: Torment
2. Unreal Tournament 2004
3. World of Warcraft
4. Dwarf Fortress
5. Creatures 2

This list is necessarily an approximation. I kept trying to decide if Starcraft should be on it, whether or not UT was better than UT2k4, whether Everquest deserved the MMO spot over WoW, Nethack wasn't available to add...

Even if we don't push it into the top 100 I hope it gets high enough that someone there reviews it.
after their eyes bleed a little and if they manage to climb the learning curve of death we'd have more converts.

PC gamer actually did a small article (not review) back when the game was still 2D and was actually how I got into the game...

Also I can see a lot of people putting DF as 3rd or 4th on their list. Obviously its your choice, but I set up this thread mainly to try and give DF some good publicity, and attract some new donations (!) so even if Df isn't necessarily your all time favourite game, it probably does need the publicity more.

Oh Armok, I don't know how to choose just five. I'll try though. In no particular order:

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri: Best 4X ever. Best atmosphere ever. Best Chairman Sheng-ji Yang ever.
Deus Ex: Still beats almost everything out there.
UFO: Enemy Unknown: I could play nothing but this ever again and probably still be happy.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind: I may have to take back saying "Best atmosphere ever" about SMAC.
Fallout: What's not to absolutely love?

Not appearing on this list:
Dwarf Fortress: Not yet. One day. Maybe even after the next release. But just... not quite yet.
Rome: Total War: My preferred of the franchise, and a beautiful thing, there's just not enough room.
Civilization 2/3/4: Sorry, SMAC took the 4X spot.
Hearts of Iron II: I love this game. If Arsenal of Democracy works out as hoped, that might take a place in the list.
World of Warcraft: Needs more in-game changes according to your actions. But it is sublimely playable and has kept my attention for ridiculous hours.

Damn you! Traitor! To the HFS Carnival!

Y'know, we're only voting DF to the top so more people will notice it + play it, not because it's necessarily the best game. Duh.
