Skills not updated after Strange Mood
« on: January 01, 2010, 12:17:23 am »

I'm fairly new to DF so I thought I should check here to see if what I encountered was a bug, or just normal behavior.

As you can see my Cheese maker created a toy hammer and never got a skill for bone carving.
Is that normal?

Forgot to mention that I'm running the OpenGL/SDL 40d16 testing version...

What sort of strange mood was it? Possessions never result in skill gain.

Also, this sort of topic should really be in the gameplay questions forum.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

If my understanding of the system is correct, he'd get skill in cheesemaking anyway, the only reason he made a bone item is because there's no cheese artifact possible (though that's an amusing thought).
But yeah.  "Possessed" "Taken by a fey mood" "Withdraws from society" or fell/macabre, neither of which I have any clue of the ingame message used...?
Which one was it?
If it was a possession, he wouldn't get any experience anyway.

Yeah, if he was Possessed, then he won't get any skill gains.

To expand upon what was said by Jay: If he went to a craftdwarf's shop and made something with bone while in a fey or secretive mood, he would become legendary in bonecarving. Moods will not give them legendary in their highest/main skill, rather it is weighted so that the chance of them getting a mood related to their highest/main skill is almost 100%.

Some skills, like cheesemaking and socializing, have no mood capabilities, so they will get a mood in a random crafts skill. You had a dwarf be possessed if he truly did not get any legendaries.

One time a jeweler of mine went into a secretive mood and create an artifact coffin out of a crystal.
He never went legendary. :\

It was a fey mood, I remember clearly because it was the first "mood" I had ever encountered ingame.
Maybe sonerohi is right and the "almost 100%" was just not enough to guarantee a result?

He's got good attributes as well, which suggests that he's supposedly skilled in something.

Did you try to browse the skill list down to see if "legendary bone carver" is listed after all the social skills? :) The arrow indicates that there are more skills, and the stats would indeed suggest some skill increase. Also the dwarf's job title seems to be Bone carver instead of Cheese maker.

His name is blue. Avari is probably correct and we cannot view the said skill, but he definitely has some skill in crafting.

Yeah, note the arrow below the list. You need to scroll it down.

Another way to tell is if his name is flashing, or if his sprite/image/ascii character or whatever is flashing. that's how I usually tell at a glance.

Until you start getting those annoying social legends.

With regards to moodable skills - If a dwarf has skill in a profession that can produce an artifact, that will be used; otherwise they become a crafter. Nonmoodable skills like cheesemaking have nothing to do with it.

Regarding this instance - yes, look beneath the social skills. Whatever he's most skilled in, it's no longer cheesemaking.
