Well, that's quite incorrect. The first to celebrate the new year were the people of Tonga (+13 GMT, it's already 2nd of January there) and the last were the people of Samoa (-11 GMT, 1 of January 1:30 am, their islands are very close to the east of Tonga islands territory). There is of course an imaginary dateline in between (-12 GMT) which holds little meaning, and only confuses people, but that line has, too, passed to 2010. It's a tricky business there...
