And since counting is possible in any language structure (I won't explain how, but I'll just say "think for a while about set theory and Saussure"), the conclusion is a bit obvious.
Are you saying that concepts (as defined by la langue) are a countably infinite set? Because that's pretty damn clever.

Although, I'd say that connotation would make it uncountably infinite. Honestly though I know jack about set theory.

No using. That's not what freedom is for.

No, I'm saying that language, as it functions, is set theory--and silence (or perhaps meaningless utterances) can be seen as the empty set.  The set-theoretical construction of the natural numbers thus implies that in any language that performs any distinction between one object and another (thus satisfying the central tenets of set theory), counting is possible, and therefore knowledge must be incomplete and possibly inconsistent.  We have no way of verifying.

In other words, I am applying Saussure to Godel and the basic set theorists in order to reaffirm the statements of Nietzsche.  This is possibly because I am a little bit crazy, but Foucault and Derrida say I am allowed to do this.

(Of course concepts are uncountably infinite, because we can conceive of any given real number)

Actually, I'm taking a second to think about that.  Perhaps you're right, but I'm not sure I can conceive of every real number.  I mean, I can prove they form a continuum and all that, but actually being able to focus in on each one specifically?  That's a different thing entirely.

How on Earth did the thread come to this?

Mostly through the magic of the Vector math-derail =/

I mean, I'm counting as concepts things which we know we can think of, but perhaps do not actively choose to imagine.  In other words, our thoughts are unlimited in number (in the abstract), even if we have a finite amount of time to consider them in; this is much like we have infinite numbers, but only a finite number of physical things to count.

Well, it's a quarter into the year, but:

I will get into the University of Michigan at least
Midway through the year for AP Calc BC, when we take the test exam for AB, I will get a 5.
I will do something awesome in Minecraft
I will run a half marathon (high hopes on this one)
I will make something on the computer
I will read Euclid's Elements in the original Greek
I will get a job
I will learn to talk to girls
I will do something productive over the summer

Heh, are we putting in new resolutions now and using this thread for next year?

In that case, I want to pass quals.  Hopefully I can manage that.

Sorry for the incredible necromancy, but yay I passed quals!

Now I only need to find an advisor, pass a language exam, pass an oral exam, write a thesis, defend the thesis, get a tenure-track position, and get tenure.  No biggie.

Also:
I want to be here when the thread gets revived again.

Your last post on the forums was today, so congratz?

I'm going to see if I can maybe try and tell my friend I love him. I doubt it.
I did, and it ended horribly and left me depressed for six months
I'm going study this time round because goddamnit I suck at that.
Hahahahayeahno
I'm not going to lose another friend.
30 goto 10
Doesn't completely count because I didn't get all of this done by January, but looking back on it, I never thought it'd end this badly so I figure I'd better reflect anyway.

I want to have completed a simulator for my mesh networking system.

Yes and no... I've got a very different project going on that's rather more impressive.

Fuck goals.

I'm not even trying anymore, because somehow I end up doing so much more and less than I ever intend to.

I want to learn literally everything. I'll post again in a year to show how far along I am.
Not a year yet, but my ~6 month update: I spent roughly 400 hours this summer on Wikipedia learning things, and can effectively take on the rest of the Knowledge Bowl team singlehandedly. Less than .00001% completion, methinks.

GO GO GO.

I look back in this topic and I realize, I've only done two out of my three stated goals from the first post of mine in this thread and the third seems entirely impossible. And the second is questionable as I don't have many friends... Maybe I need more.

Or rather, I realised I could, in fact, draw, it's just people that I have trouble with~
Then I decided fuck drawing, I'm getting a camera, so no tablet for me~
