Postmortem Tomb Designation
« on: March 24, 2008, 05:38:00 pm »

This may or may not be easy to implement, but it would be very nice if we could assign a tomb to a dwarf after they've died.

Absolutely. I frequently have dwarves which died in heroic, humorous, or hilarious ways that I wish to award a tomb even if they didn't have one to start with.

Definitely worth coding. When one soldier holds off the goblin horde, I should be able to give it a proper resting place.

Maybe this could be best implemented with the ability to relocate tombs. Hero is buried in niche 17C, but gets relocated the El Grande Mausoleum #5 upon its completion. As long as you provide enough basic burial space (even an indoor graveyard would do) you can move your dead around to better living quarters.

I concur, very handy.  Sure, it doesn't do much for the dwarves, but it makes the players feel better about interring the remains of a certain prized dwarf.

There's just going to be one big hassle : the list of dead dwarves is usually waaay longer than that of the living. Picture yourself parsing through 1000 dwarf names to find that of your legendary super-champion, especially if you forgot to give him a custom name or title.

Then again that could be solved by using a trade-depot like interface for your dead. Say, one screen for the living, one for the recently dead (say, last 3 years), one for the long dead, one for dead foreigners (right now, dwarves seem to give a burial to traders and caravan guards).

It should also have options to toggle on and off showing of legendary, military, noble status of the dead.

I've been taking to throwing all my lengendaries / dwarves that did something awesome in to mass graves outside then flooring it over.  I call them my "important graves" and, well, I kind of wish I could just put them in tombs.

So, yes.  Seconded.

The trade depot-style could work.  Why not just sort by profession?  All the dead dwarves still retain those, and since you can search by profile you could hopefully narrow it down a little.

I'm not sure about sorting by profession. More specifically, I'm not sure about how custom professions would (or should) be handled in that case.

For instance I end up naming half my dwarves 'Haulers' just to know that they only do hauling jobs. However, since the game retains their original professions, I have to look for the lone gemcutter in the middle of my army of haulers (it's even more a problem since the ssign room menu isn't color-coded)

Can't it just sort by time of death? If one of your dwarves did something awesome then died and you want to give him a tomb, he probably died rather recently...

Sorted newest to oldest, it'd work pretty well.

Alphabetical is also an option, as we can typically remember the first half of a dwarf's name (along with a bit of his last).

I'm more willing to support two lists: the dead and the living, they can be sorted differently or not, but either way, living nobles should show up at the top the way they currently do, as they're most likely to get assigned burial chambers more often than anyone else.

You can get the best of both worlds (has to be a pun in there somewhere) by just giving a tomb two options: assign still does what it does now, and inter or bury or something else denoting "stick him in the box" gives you a list of the dead sorted by duration of croakedness.

Othob, not only do you have a brilliant idea, but I also love the phrase "duration of croakedness"

Also, it would be nice to be able to access at least the skills that recently deceased dwarf had enabled: it helps whether you know exactly which assortment of skills you must find a replacement for.
