I Like Big Buttes and I Cannot Lie
« on: December 31, 2009, 07:23:38 am »

I'd like to see more interesting geographic features, mesas in particular.

They would be scattered about in sandy, windy parts of the map, especially deserts and wastelands. A mesa would add an advantage to a biome normally overlooked because of its harshness in the form of an awesome tower-like fort that stacks around a dozen layers over the surface.

I could see it being very doable, since all of the conditions for natural structures like these are hard-coded into the game already. They'd pretty much be an inverted chasm.

What do you guys think?

And shut up, it was an awesome joke

...That was a terrible title.

But yes, aboveground diversity must already be planned, given that the upcoming release is underground diversity...

...That was a terrible title.

If it's terrible enough to attract many visitors it works ;)

Anyway, the current errosion system, especialy for watter but also for sand, seems to be lacking. I often end up with rock towering 3 tiles above the ground and being cut by a river for example. Logicaly that river would have gone around the rock. Also, there seems to be no real difference in the wind erosion rate between different kind of rocks (unlike with water, that seems to erode hard rocks less then soft rocks. You can even find waterfalls in hard rocks if you know where to look)

That was the best title ever. I too like big buttes and I feel no reason to commit a falsehood.

Oh, good idea!

Just think about how easy it would be to shape such buttes into other things.. Some sound eerily similiar.

I like big buttes and I cannot lie
You other miners can't deny
That when a hill crops up with a sheer cliff face
And a rubble pile at its base
You get sprung, wanna pick out that tuff
'Cause you notice that butte was bluffed
Deep in the plains uncaring
I'm hooked and I can't stop staring

...that was terrible.

You, sir, win at Dwarf Fortress.  Orris comes in second for giving you the inspiration.
