I'm just getting to grips with these layer types outlined in the wiki:
http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Layer

It's quite rare to get a magma-pipe map with abundant iron, the way they work.  It's worth the time to look for an embark area that straddles different layer types, so you can get magma on one side of the map and iron on the other.

I solved that problem long ago with crazy world-gen settings that have, in the past, resulted in one rather entertaining location that had 7 different biomes in it.

I've had this problem, but with marble. "Oh boy!" I said, "Look at all this flux! I'll be able to make tons of steel and some cool statues!" But that's all there was... marble, marble, and more marble. Finally, at the bottom layers of the map there was a few levels of granite, but to my dismay, that only meant loads of tetrahedrite and gold. It's too bad I couldn't make shiny armor from all the electrum I had.

I tried explaining this to my friends without remembering that no one other than geologists and dwarf fortress players know what the fuck tetrahedrite is.

I removed the flux tag from marble so that i could be assured of sedimentary whenever i find flux.

I think i'll also remove Talc from the game entirely, because it is extremely annoying. Or perhaps change it to veins.

I was thinking, if you want to spoil the realism and make things even easier, you could just add [ENVIRONMENT:IGNEOUS_ALL:...] and [ENVIRONMENT:METAMORPHIC:...] and there would be little chance that you wouldn't get any magnetite. You could even make it present in whole layers if you really wanted, but that feels too much like cheating. :P

You're doing better than me. I have, in total, found 5 blocks of Tetrehedrite, and my useless miner only got 4 chunks of ore out of it.

On the other hand, i'm going great for Galena.

Hey, my current fort is Dolomite/Magma Pipe.

1 Hematite vein, 1 Limonite vein, 2 Magnetite clusters (one of which had two Platinum veins) so far!

You should've played with my Minerals mod enabled, Neruz. It has Talc frequency down to 35 versus Magnetite's 80.

I've almost never seen invaders arrive with steel.

Speaking of which, I still haven't figured out why my dark elves use wood everything when I'm sure I had [METAL_PREF] on them. How does wooden chain mail even work?

Why stop there? I changed all my useless stones to small clusters (didn't want to get rid of them altogether, because I like some variety) and changed most of my ores to large clusters, and made them appear in "all_stone". Feels good, man.
