In my case, magma map, no sand, only layer that has any iron is basalt. Kept finding microcline with the worst abundancy. I did find two veins of native copper though! And 2 veins of native silver in the granite.

As for limestone, I always find hematite in limestone in the first minute of exploratory mining. :S

I got a map with a lot of gabbro layers. "Cool, gabbro, maybe I'll find diamonds", I thought. there are maybe two tiles of gabbro between each olivine deposit- I've been doing exploratory mining in it for years and not found any kimberlite veins. x.x

THIRTY CLUSTERS OF TALC

36 CHANCES AT METAL AND NOT A SINGLE ONE.

That's it, i'm modding a smelter reaction to turn talc into iron. This is rediculous. My dwarves skin will be soft and smooth, but they're gonna have no goddamn armor.

Fuck you too game. Fuck. You.

--EDIT--

FUUUUCK YOU GAME.

I just ran into a kimberlite vein by accident. It had a single pure "Perfect Crystal Diamond" (modded diamond, ludicrously rare, worth about twice as much as adamantine) in it.

THE DIAMOND IS ON THE MAP BORDER.

I don't play for a month and a bit, and when i come back it punishes me, punishes me. That was the only local tile of gabbro i had too; no more chances for diamonds.

Words do not exist to describe how i am feeling right now.

You know, I'm having the opposite problem.  No magma.  No coal.  No lignite.

However, I have roughly 600 pieces of magnetite just kind of laying around because I can't crank out enough damn charcoal to smelt it all.

Yea, dolomite is notorious....

I don't get why people have issues with limestone, I've never had any huge issues with it. If you look using DF reveal or with Visual Fortress, theres at least some iron somewhere.

In fact, my current fort has a mountain and lowlands made of limestone. The mountain part doesn't have much iron (magnetite or otherwise), but below it, there is iron in ABUNDANCE. And the limestone is several levels thick.

Maybe I just have a knack for finding mineral rich sites.

Edit: Go and smooth the tile with that pure diamond on it, even if you can't mine it out, use it as part of your archetecture!

I'm just getting to grips with these layer types outlined in the wiki:
http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Layer

It's quite rare to get a magma-pipe map with abundant iron, the way they work.  It's worth the time to look for an embark area that straddles different layer types, so you can get magma on one side of the map and iron on the other.

Every time I embark on dolomite, I find hundreds of talc veins. I had to mod talc to melt at room temperature to get rid of them all. I like limestone though, I always see a huge variety of ores in limestone - from coal and lignite, to malachite (I love copper, makes so many fun alloys), to all three iron ores. My best map had every type of metal on it, it was fantastic, half my fortress was cast out of brass or billon. If I hadn't been overwhelmed with totems for trade, I would have been exporting steel goblets. I only managed to smelt two of the 13 magnetite veins I hit on two levels. Wish I had kept that map.

I usually delete marble from my raws. That lets you search for magma and flux to find magma with iron nearby, since the only flux layers left are sedimentary.

Goblinite (or Orcinite as the case may be) always works. I don't even need to smelt the limonite I found on my map!

Flux and a magma pool. I just wish it had sand.

My map has magma and a brook...

And an Obsidian layer bursting with hematite.

And I embarked on an obsidian block road, too ;D

Obsidian block aboveground fortress is being designed now.

See, I just stay away from dolomite nowadays. Give me claystone or chalk any day, maybe with some nice marble for the second layer. Dolomite can take a hike.
